POSITION SUMMARY/FUNCTION

Performs various patient care activities to care for the personal needs and comfort of the client as well as for the effective and efficient operation of the facility, while promoting a safe and therapeutic milieu. Staff is expected to teach basic living skills to clients daily, as well as perform various functions within the facility. This position is an “awake” position; therefore, no sleeping is permitted while on duty.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBLITIES/FUNCTIONS/TASKS:

1. Prepares snacks/meals for clients as required by facility.

A. Prepares balanced diet commensurate with suggested menus if furnished.

B. Prepares food, serves and cleans for special meetings and occasions.

C. Comply with SpectraCare policies and procedures and/or other policies/guidelines when handling or serving food. Ensure proper protocol is followed at all times.

2. Orders, properly stores, and maintains appropriate quantity of food used in meal preparations.

A. Properly stores leftover food for later consumption.

B. Complete required food reports as required by SpectraCare policy, USDA policy, etc.

C. Maintain pantry stock and discard food upon expiration.

D. Train clients on proper food handling to include but not limited to preparation, discarding, etc.

3. Cleans and directs others in cleaning equipment, kitchen, dining facilities, individual’s personal space, and total home environment.

A. Adhere to health and sanitation standards set for personal cleanliness and cleanliness of all helpers.

B. Maintains appropriate cleanliness standards for the kitchen and its equipment enabling acceptable inspection scores.

C. Assist with changing bed linens and making bed.

D. Assist with maintaining resident laundry.

E. Ensure residents room (dressers, floors, etc) are clean and free of clutter.

4. Completes necessary documentation required to include but not limited to incident reports, client progress notes, basic living skills, etc.

A. Complete clerical forms as needed and required by SpectraCare and DMH policy.

B. Complete EMAR reports and documents as specified by SpectraCare policy.

C. Complete other reports to include but not limited to temperature reports (refrigerator), fire drills, etc.

5. Ability to safely operate system vehicles to include wheelchair/handicap vehicles when transporting clients.

A. Assists clients on and off of the vehicle, to include clients with limited mobility.

B. Correctly loading and unloading wheelchair users on lift to ensure safety.

C. Correctly secure wheelchair users on bus safely by ensuring wheelchair and resident is strapped in securely utilizing the correct belts to prevent injuries.

D. Conduct system vehicle maintenance checklist as required by SpectraCare policy.

E. Maintain cleanliness of vehicles.

F. Drive clients to various appointments, outings, as required.

G. Follow guidelines of Cell Phone policy while driving system vehicles.

H. Maintain gas receipts and turn in on a timely basis.

I. Maintain vehicle fire extinguisher, first aid kit and markers.

J. Be familiar with the Vehicle Operator’s Manual.

K. Maintain current driver’s license and safe driving record.

L. Follow policies for breakdowns, accidents, etc.

M. Do not drive under awnings or through drive thru on system vehicle.

6. Provide educational group and/or individual facilitation as required, teaching basic living skills.

A. Plans, organizes, and leads skills-based groups related to basic living skills, social skills, coping skills, self-esteem, relaxation, etc.

B. Document groups according to SpectraCare Personnel Policies and Procedures, SpectraCare Clinical Policy, including but not limited to the Alabama Administrative Code, CMS, and all other applicable regulating and contractual entities.

C. Assist individuals with basic living skill functions, teaching them as you assist.

D. Teach individuals about maintaining proper hygiene and grooming to increase level of functioning.

E. Assist with cleaning resident if soiled and replacing soiled clothes/lines with clean ones as needed.

7. Assist other staff as necessary in dealing with clients in a home setting to include but not limited to: A. Assist staff and/or transport clients to doctor’s appointments, labs, dialysis, etc.

B. Report changes in mental or physical status to other members of the treatment team.

C. Document on progress notes and report to medical staff any follow ups, new doctors’ orders, etc.

8. Performs other duties including but not limited to:

A. Treat clients with respect and courtesy at all times.

B. Ensure necessary documentation is completed in a timely manner with minimal errors and in compliance with applicable guidelines and policies.

C. Receive and respond to inquiries promptly and courteously.

D. Meet with supervisor as established.

E. Follow guidelines of SpectraCare Personnel Policy, SpectraCare Clinical Policy, including but not limited to the Alabama Administrative Code, CMS, and all other applicable regulating and contractual entities.

F. Participate in training, workshops, in-services, and/or administrative meetings as assigned.

G. Ensure any necessary documentation is completed and up to date before annual leave or personal leave is taken.

H. Adhere to Dress Code as set forth in the SpectraCare policies and procedures.

I. Provide basic living skills daily as expected, conducting group and/or individual BLS.

J. Respond to emergency and/or crisis situations as they arise.

K. Functions and performs well in stressful environments and manages work related stress to

ensure client/staff safety.

L. Demonstrates a willingness to work on any unit / program at SpectraCare based on facility

needs as directed.

M. Ability to conform to SpectraCare’s Core Values as duties are carried out daily.

N. Functions within professional boundaries with individuals and others.

O. Works in a cooperative manner with other SpectraCare employees, individuals, and/or family members.

P. Participates in beginning/end of shift unit reporting.

Q. Performs duties independently and/or with minimal supervision.

R. Perform all duties with the highest standard of ethics.

S. Works well with other staff and individuals to ensure safety of program, individuals and other staff.

T. Other services, tasks, functions, and responsibilities deemed necessary; not otherwise specified.

9. Regular attendance with timely arrival and departure according to scheduled hours.

  • Must be able to work full time to include but not limited to on-call hours, nights, and/or weekends as scheduled.
  • To ensure client/employee safety while on duty, must remain awake during scheduled

working hours.

10. Fulfill duties of Nurse Delegation Program.

A. Become fully certified as a Medication Administration Certified (MAC) provider.

B. Follow all regulations as outlined in the MAC policies including but not limited to the Seven (7) Rights and Responsibilities, training, consultation with RN/LPN, error reporting, etc.

C. Comply with all documentation requirements of the MAC program including the MARS, counting and recording controlled substances, PRN medications, sign out sheets for home visits, and medication errors reporting sheets.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBLITIES/FUNCTIONS/TASKS:

  • Attend all required job-related/system training.
  • Assist in other areas as needed.
  • Assumes other related duties as assigned.
  • Conforms to System’s policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of mental illness, and/or substance use.
  • Knowledge and understanding of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to have patience and emotional stability.
  • Ability to respond professionally in a crisis situation.
  • Ability to communicate with mental ill/substance use individuals and staff, in a professional manner, both written and oral.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of job tasks.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to operate office machines such as computer, fax machine, and copy machine.
  • Ability to read instruction manuals printed in English.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of job tasks, in a safe manner without endangering any employee, client, or asset.
  • Ability to follow through with assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow orders and directives and work with supervisor and other staff.
  • Ability to adhere to SpectraCare policy, HIPAA laws, and 42 CFR regarding confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain unit files through electronic medical record.
  • Ability to adhere to health and safety standards.
  • Ability to stay awake during working shift.
  • Basic knowledge of individual’s rights.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
  • Ability to function and perform well in stressful environments and manage work related stress to ensure safety of those in the program.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen when given to include but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, suspicion, etc.
  • Ability to function within professional boundaries with individuals and others.
  • Ability to adapt to conditions which may vary considerably.
  • Ability to relay coping skills, positive attitude skills and self-esteem.
  • Ability to facilitate educational groups to individuals in the program.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other staff, Program Director and all levels of organizational staff.

ESSENTIAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Complete initial new hire training.
  • Complete required on the job training (OJT) training by the department.
  • Obtain proper certifications needed to perform job duties.
  • Complete annual training as required by the Alabama Administrative Code, CMS, and all other applicable regulating and contractual entities.
  • Complete First Aid/CPR upon hire and prior to working alone with clients; and continuously thereafter maintaining current certification.

WORK ENVIORNMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical ability to work assigned shift. May require periodic weekend/evening/holiday work with occasional overtime to meet the organizations’ needs.
  • Must be able to travel to system facilities and/or other locations/outings with exposure to changing weather conditions.
  • Work location is primarily in a temperature-controlled setting with minimal periods of sitting at a desk with associated repetitive motions. Must understand and practice good ergonomic movements to avoid injuries.
  • Physical ability to correctly lift and/or moves up to seventy-five (75) pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Required to talk to or hear staff, clients, and/or others.
  • Required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, kneel, and/or reach frequently.
  • Employee may be exposed to one or more of the following: disagreeable odors, chemicals such as disinfectants, cleansers, soaps, etc; latex, plastic and other materials used for personal protective equipment; noise and distractions; unpleasant sights; unpredictable behaviors; contagious diseases; and/or wet floors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Good MVR acceptable to automobile insurance carrier for inclusion on agency policy.
  • Pass background check and/or drug screen as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • At least one year of clinical experience in the provision of direct patient care.
  • At least one year of clinical experience in the provision of patient care in a mental health setting.
