Spectra Tech, Inc. is urgently hiring for several Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) in Berkeley, CA



Position Overview

We are seeking experienced Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) to support a DOE facility. The ideal candidate will have prior experience supporting alpha research or production facilities. Experience supporting accelerator facilities is a plus but is not required.


Candidates must have previous DOE experience and have been qualified as a DOE CORE RCT. This role requires field work, radiological monitoring, emergency response support, and the ability to safely handle and transport monitoring equipment and instrumentation.


Position Levels & Experience Requirements

RCT II

  • 2–5 years of Radiological Control Technician experience

RCT III

  • 3–7 years of Radiological Control Technician experience

RCT IV

  • 5–10 years of Radiological Control Technician experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor personnel, work areas, and items leaving radiological areas to control exposure from internal and external radiation sources
  • Recommend appropriate:
  • Personnel monitoring devices
  • Protective equipment
  • Work duration limits for radiological activities
  • Observe processes and evaluate radiological conditions
  • Read, record, analyze, and report data from:
  • Radiation detection instruments
  • Air sampling equipment
  • Bioassay sampling programs
  • Conduct investigations when radiological results exceed established guides, standards, or limits
  • Calibrate radiological instruments
  • Operate automated low-background counting equipment
  • Process TLDs (Thermoluminescent Dosimeters)
  • Perform lung count evaluations
  • Participate in planning activities for new work processes
  • Support facility emergency response activities as a member of the Emergency Response Organization

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an RCT role
  • Previously qualified as a DOE CORE RCT
  • Prior DOE facility experience required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to move and transport radiological instrumentation and equipment, including neutron instruments weighing approximately 20 pounds

Required Knowledge & Training

  • DOE RCT Standardized CORE Training Certification
  • Knowledge of:
  • Radiological monitoring and sampling principles
  • Internal and external radiation hazards
  • Radiation protection standards and limits
  • Radiological survey techniques
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and unit conversions associated with radiological monitoring data
  • Ability to identify radiological issues, investigate causes, and recommend corrective actions
  • Understanding of the fundamental characteristics and behavior of various types of radiation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting alpha research or production facilities
  • Experience supporting accelerator facilities
  • Previous experience supporting DOE nuclear operations and radiological work environments
