Job Summary
Specialty Steel Service, Inc. is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Slitter Operator to join our team at our Carbon Steel Service Center. This role is responsible for the setup, operation, and monitoring of slitting machines used to cut carbon steel coils into specified widths. The ideal candidate will have experience handling heavy materials, maintaining quality standards, and performing routine equipment maintenance to support efficient production.
Job Responsibilities
- Set up and operate slitting lines to process carbon steel coils according to customer specifications.
- Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical drawings to determine slit widths, tolerances, and coil dimensions.
- Safely load and unload steel coils using overhead cranes or other material-handling equipment.
- Monitor machine performance to ensure accurate and consistent slitting; adjust for thickness, tension, and alignment as needed.
- Inspect finished slit coils to verify compliance with quality standards and customer requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on slitting equipment.
- Accurately record production data, coil specifications, and quality control checks.
- Follow all safety protocols and promptly report equipment issues or unsafe conditions.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
- Assist in training new operators when required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
- Minimum of [1–3] years’ experience operating slitting or metal processing equipment, preferably with carbon steel.
- Familiarity with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures) and understanding of tolerances.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and production specifications.
- Forklift experience is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
