Duties
- Assist patients in selecting eyewear by understanding their needs, preferences, and lifestyle to recommend suitable frames and lenses.
- Take precise measurements of pupillary distance, frame fitting, and other vital signs necessary for accurate lens fabrication.
- Prepare and process optical prescriptions using electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Epic or similar platforms.
- Conduct laboratory tasks including lens edging, mounting, and quality checks to ensure optimal fit and function of eyewear.
- Maintain detailed medical records, including patient histories, vital signs, and treatment notes in compliance with HIPAA standards.
- Support clinic operations by managing inventory levels of frames, lenses, and optical supplies while performing retail math calculations for sales transactions.
- Educate patients on proper eyewear care, contact lens usage, and the importance of regular eye exams for pediatrics and senior care populations.
- Assist with medical billing and coding procedures related to optical services to ensure accurate reimbursement processes.
- Uphold aseptic techniques during any laboratory procedures or equipment handling to maintain a sterile environment.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to interpret medical terminology related to ophthalmology and physiology for comprehensive patient care.
Experience
- Proven experience as an optician or in a similar optical retail or clinical setting with a strong understanding of optical products and services.
- Knowledge of ophthalmology practices, anatomy of the eye, physiology principles, and medical terminology relevant to vision care.
- Familiarity with EMR systems comparable electronic health record platforms used in clinics.
- Laboratory experience involving lens fabrication techniques including edging, mounting, and quality assurance checks.
- Experience working with pediatric patients as well as senior populations within clinical or retail environments.
- Background in retail sales combined with retail management skills including retail math for pricing and inventory control.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations concerning patient privacy and confidentiality in healthcare settings.
