About Us
Specialty Machine Works (SMW) is an ASME Code fabrication shop based in Gulfport, MS, building pressure vessels, tanks, and structural weldments for industrial and marine customers. We're looking for a detail-oriented Quality Control Floor Inspector to join our QC team and help us hold the line on code compliance and workmanship quality across every job.
Position Summary
The QC Floor Inspector works the shop floor to verify that fabrication, welding, and assembly work meets ASME Code requirements, project specifications, and approved drawings. This role reports directly to the Quality Control Manager and serves as the QC department's primary presence on the production floor.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform in-process and final inspections of fabricated components and weldments for conformance to ASME Section VIII/IX, project specifications, and approved drawings.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, create weld maps, and GD&T (Geometric, Dimensioning, & Tolerancing) callouts to verify dimensional and geometric compliance.
- Verify material certifications and maintain material traceability throughout the fabrication process.
- Perform MT & UT requirements, coordinate UT & RT activities with vendors and review results for code acceptance.
- Document inspection results, hold points, and nonconformances (NCRs) accurately and promptly.
- Support the Quality Control Manager in maintaining Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and final documentation packages.
- Maintain calibration records and proper care of measuring and test equipment.
- Communicate quality issues to shop supervision and QC Manager to support timely corrective action.
Qualifications
- 2–5 years of quality control or fabrication inspection experience, preferably in an ASME Code shop.
- Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII (pressure vessels) and Section IX (welding qualifications).
- Ability to read blueprints, weld maps, and GD&T and apply them to floor inspections.
- ASNT NDE Level II certification (MT, PT,) preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and clear, accurate inspection documentation.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the shop floor for extended periods, including around active fabrication and welding operations.
