Qualificaions:
Education:
Master’s degree required
Certification:
Endorsement or other professional certification for the provision of special education, special education approval for supervisor/director with adequate continuing education credits toward maintaining such certifications are required.
Work Experience:
Three years of experience in special education administration or other position(s) of leadership related to the responsibilities described in this description is preferred.
Skills:
- Possess clear and reliable communication skills
- Ability to create and provide effective technical assistance and professional development in a variety of formats on issues pertaining to special education
- Ability to support and coach the implementation of “best practices” related to special education
- Ability to implement systemic changes to improve the overall delivery of special education programming and services
- Ability to identify and capitalize on the strengths of others to provide high quality services to students
- Ability to develop positive and supportive relationships with others and understand perspectives from several points of view
- Possess a working understanding of federal and state rules and regulations and related compliance indicators
- Ability to stay current regarding changes and trends in education
- Capability of developing and writing clear, comprehensive and useful policies and procedures
- Possess expertise in problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation
- Willingness to seek and accept performance feedback
Essential Job Functions:
- Hire, train and supervise ancillary staff.
- Delineate roles and responsibilities of ancillary staff.
- Assist administration in hiring and training special education teachers.
- Monitor and assist in the compliance and correction of monitoring issues.
- Perform ongoing analysis of regional needs and determine how to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Coordinate and provide professional development for special education.
- Promote “best” and research-based practices.
- Lead the team in using a RtI/MTSS model of assessment (early identification and intervention).
- Collaborate with schools to establish effective and efficient communication and team processes.
- Assist in addressing crisis situations; facilitate and resolve contentious issues, IEPs, concerns and complaints.
- Serve as an advisor for all special education legal issues.
- Serve as a liaison between the local district and the VBISD.
General Responsibilities

Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.
Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Director of Special Education.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
