DESCRIPTION:

The Moses Lake School District is seeking a Full Time one-on-one Registered Nurse for the 25-26 school year to work within the public school system (elementary) and perform nursing services necessary to ensure the health, safety and access to curriculum of a medically complex student. General duties include, but are not limited to: ongoing health assessment; medical treatment; medication administration; development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of individualized health care plans; collaboration with other health care providers and school personnel regarding the health of the student assigned; providing emergency care to the assigned student ; supporting the maintenance of comprehensive school health records for the student assigned; personal care assistance may include toileting or catheterization; supporting physical transfer; support curriculum access duties to ensure academic access.

 

The 1:1 nurse will provide district-wide nursing support during periods when their assigned student is absent.

 

The chosen applicant may be required to supervise the student during transportation to and from school.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Verified, unencumbered WA State RN license
  2. Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program
  3. Washington State Educational Support Associate (ESA) Certification - School Nurse
  4. Completion of school nurse induction program
  5. Communicate effectively with staff, parents, students and agencies when necessary.
  6. Valid WA State Driver’s License
  7. Promote team building.
  8. Demonstrate student advocacy.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. School nurse experience in a PreK – 12 school setting

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Meets or exceeds performance expectations in competence in role responsibilities and quality and quantity of work.  
  2. Knowledge of WA State laws and professional standards related to school health regulations and services.
  3. Knowledge of professional nursing standards, principles, and practices within a school environment to include medically fragile student health needs, human anatomy and physiology, child growth and development, basic pharmacology, medical terminology, and infection control measures.
  4. Knowledge and skills of nursing procedures, including, but not limited to: catheterizations, suctioning, IV’s, tracheostomy care, gastrostomy care and feedings, nebulizers, insulin pump management.
  5. Knowledge and skills to conduct and interpret health screenings and physical examinations.
  6. Knowledge of and ability to practice confidentiality standards in a school setting.
  7. Demonstrates, supports and follows district values and policies and procedures.
  8. Demonstrates clinical reasoning, critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  9. Demonstrates ability to adjust to and use new approaches in the performance of work duties.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and outside agencies.
  11. Ability to function independently and as an effective team member.
  12. Ability to provide services to students, staff and families without discrimination of any kind.
  13. Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and positively, both orally and in writing.
  14. Demonstrates proficient computer applications skills, including PreK-12 student information systems
  15. CPR/AED certifications; appropriate response to illness and injury.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assesses and provides for the physical and emotional health needs of students during the school day and school-sponsored activities within the scope of school nurse practice.
  2. Assesses the physical and emotional health of students as related to the educational process.
  3. Initiates referrals for diagnosis and treatment of identified health needs and provides follow up.
  4. Communicates health concerns which may impact learning to appropriate school staff.
  5. Uses student-centered, evidence-based practice and performance data to inform student care.
  6. Advocates for individual students, encouraging student self-empowerment, self-management, problem solving and effective communication.
  7. Integrates ethical and equitable provisions into all areas of practice; preserves and protects student and family autonomy, dignity, privacy, and other rights sensitive to diversity in the school setting.
  8. Develops plans for student care based on nursing assessment, including interventions, identification of outcomes, and evaluation of care
  9. Develops individual health plans (IHPs) for medically fragile students, students with health concerns and/or requiring nursing treatments or medication administration.
  10. Trains and delegates tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel, including medication administration, nursing treatments, emergency response and documentation, as permitted by law. Performs professional nursing tasks, including medication administration, treatments and emergency response services when on site/as time permits.
  11. Coordinates student health care between the student’s medical, family and school.
  12. Communicates fluently with both educational and medical professionals and staff.
  13. Maintains comprehensive health services documentation of student plans, assessments, interventions (including medications and procedures) and outcomes.
  14. Participates in data management processes, including collection, reporting and analysis of student health data.
  15. Provides a safe and healthy school environment through infection prevention and control measures, including monitoring and surveillance; serves as liaison between school district and local public health.   
  16. Assists students and families with locating health care support and identified social determinants of health needs.
  17. Completes district assignments and submits reports and/or records within timelines.
  18. Maintains school health room supplies and equipment.
