JOB DESCRIPTION:          DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES

 

SALARY SCHEDULE:          DIRECTOR SCALE

SAFETY-SENSITIVE:           YES

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Director of Health Services provides strategic leadership and expert guidance to advance effective district-wide health policies, practices, and programs, collaborating with administrators, educational teams, and licensed medical professionals to ensure high-quality and coordinated school health services. This role also maintains continual awareness of emerging state and federal regulations to ensure full compliance and the ongoing alignment of district practices with current legal and professional standards. 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) Licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing
  • Certified, or eligible to be Certified, as a School Nurse by the Oklahoma State Board of Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition/Dietetics, Social Work, Health Education, Public Administration, Health/Medical Law or Education preferred
  • CPR Instructor Training Certification
  • 2 years of experience in the public health and/or school district health fields required
  • Ability to perform all essential duties satisfactorily

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Leads and evaluates the district’s health services program, ensuring effective health education, screenings, emergency care, and compliance with district/state policies.
  2. Supervises and supports all district RNs and LPNs, providing guidance, scheduling, and performance evaluations alongside campus administrators.
  3. Ensures district-wide compliance with state, federal, and board health regulations, including communicable disease protocols and required reporting.
  4. Coordinates student health services and oversees care plans, including 504 medical needs, healthcare plans, physician orders, and follow-up referrals.
  5. Manages the district health services budget and resources, including purchasing supplies, monitoring equipment, and allocating funds responsibly.
  6. Oversees all health documentation and data systems, ensuring accurate student records, immunization data, and timely submission of required reports.
  7. Provides ongoing professional development and mandated trainings, including CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and health-related certifications.
  8. Coordinates required health screenings and health education programs, partnering with district staff and external agencies such as nursing students and volunteers.
  9. Serves as liaison to public health agencies and district leadership, communicating health concerns, outbreaks, and district-wide health updates.
  10. Other duties as assigned

LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR SKILLS: 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.  Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.

 

REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fume or airborne particles.  The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold (including outdoors), extreme heat (including direct sunlight), risk of electrical shock and vibration.

 

The noise level in the work environment will vary from somewhat loud to extremely loud.

 

To ensure continuity of services, a different work location may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for a varied work location will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for this change will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Employee may occasionally be required to supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.
