Position Summary:
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate, hands-on support to children with special needs in a safe, structured, and engaging environment. This role focuses on assisting children with daily activities, supporting positive behavior, and ensuring each child’s well-being while participating in club programs. Services are provided utilizing Virginia Beach City Public Schools property. This is a fast-growing program launching in September, with initial hours on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and the potential for additional days and hours as the program expands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct care and supervision to children with special needs in group and one-on-one settings
- Support and manage behaviors using calm, patient, and positive approaches
- Assist children with activities of daily living, including toileting and bathroom support as needed
- Engage children in recreational, social, and developmental activities
- Follow individualized care plans and behavior support strategies
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding participant needs and progress
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience working with children with special needs preferred
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in all situations
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Willingness to assist with personal care tasks, including bathroom assistance
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and actively engage with children for extended periods
- Ability to assist children with mobility and personal care tasks as needed
Work Environment:
- May involve working one-on-one with a child or within a small group setting
