Work Schedule: 4.0 hours per day – 180 days per year (Monday-Friday)

Position Summary:

This position will provide comprehensive school mental health services to parents, students and school staff, addressing barriers that limit a student from receiving full benefit from their educational experience. Respond to referrals from school administration, parents, teachers, the Student Support Team, the Special Education Committee and others by providing direct services and by assisting families in accessing appropriate community resources. They will work collaboratively with the Lead MTSS Coordinator, COSA on providing therapeutic services for students who are experiencing mental health challenges, trauma, and chronic stress. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling 
  • Preferred license in the state of Washington in counseling or social work
  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills  
  • Washington State driver’s license or evidence of mobility
  • Successful experience at appropriate grade level preferred
  • Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
    • Completion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date

  • Knowledge and skills for direct and indirect intervention including: counseling on an individual, group, or family basis
  • Ability to consult with administrators, teachers, parents, and other professionals about student problems and appropriate change strategies
  • Ability to network with school programs and community agencies to provide essential services for families and children
  • Ability to understand the knowledge, skills, and processes required for effective casework practice
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mental  health profession including associated laws (IDEA, ADA, compulsory attendance, etc.) 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical  and professional issues and standards
  • Demonstrate knowledge of foundations of school psychology and the role and function of mental health therapy as it relates to a school setting. ool social worker
  • Demonstrate knowledge of understanding of child development, psychopathology, social and environmental conditioning, cultural diversity, and family systems

 

Essential Job Functions:  

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.  Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Provide mental health therapy using evidence based practice
    • Provide crisis management for students and families 
  • Serve on student support teams and special education committees
    • Review student records to identify previous barriers and/or interventions 
    • Conduct parent interviews to acquire socio-developmental information as needed for special education referral
    • Analyze information gained through record reviews and interviews to determine environmental impacts and appropriate resource needs; integrate gained information into a written report and oral presentation
    • Attend and participate in Manifestation meetings
    • Interview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of action
    • Assist the school in following school board regulations for excessive absences and truancy; attend student support team meetings and court intervention
    • Develop and implement professional development training for educational staff and parents, as requested
    • Provide individual and/or group counseling
    • Respond to referrals requesting verification of residence
    • Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices for the provision of comprehensive school social work services
    • Conduct home visits as a method to access the family and conduct interviews in response to school referrals
    • Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refers parents and student to agencies when appropriate
    • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours
    • Professionally interact with students, staff, and public
    • Establish and maintain professional contacts with students
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures 
  • Comply with the Code of Professional Conduct
  • Perform related duties as assigned

 

Work Environment:  

Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment; may be exposed to childhood diseases; may be required to balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; may be required to stand for prolonged periods; may be exposed to high noise levels; and may experience a multitude of demands and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.

 

Evaluation

The School Mental Health Therapist shall be evaluated periodically by the Building Principal and Lead MTSS Coordinator COSA pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria.  The process shall include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the above essential job functions.
