Key Responsibilities
- Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive evaluations/standardized assessment using various tools to understand a student's functional strengths and barriers to participation in school activities.
- Intervention Planning:
Create and implement individualized, evidence-based treatment plans to improve motor skills, strength, coordination, and balance.
- Direct Therapy Services:
Provide direct therapeutic interventions to help students develop essential physical skills needed for the school setting.
- Collaboration:
Work closely with teachers, parents, and other specialists (e.g., occupational therapists, special education teachers) to create integrated support systems.
- Environmental Modifications:
Recommend and assist with adapting the school environment, equipment, and activities to ensure accessibility and safety for all students.
- Adaptive Equipment:
Train students, staff, and families on how to use adaptive equipment (like walkers or braces) to improve functional mobility and independence.
- Documentation:
Maintain detailed and accurate records of assessments, treatment plans, and student progress.
- IEP Involvement:
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and provide input for the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- State licensure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, families, and the school team.
- Ability to assess and adapt to changing student needs and developmental stages.
- Knowledge of pediatric physical therapy, kinesiology, and biomechanics.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and IEPs is often preferred.
