Job Title: DISTRICT RN

Department: STUDENT SERVICES

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

 

The job of District RN is done for the purpose of overseeing the individual health needs of students; implementing health care plans for students directed by physicians; ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; providing appropriate immediate care of ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff and administrators; conducting mandated health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow up treatment. The District RN does not supervise any employees and reports directly to the Director of Student Services or designee.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Administers or directs trained district staff to administer first aid, medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive District health program and school programs, in conjunction with other District Nurses and District personnel.
  • Assists with the assessment of situations involving students’ safety, including but not limited to, abuse (physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
  • Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment for students, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents and outside medical professionals regarding school health concerns.
  • Serves as liaison between the school district and public health agencies. 
  • Conducts programs and/or activities (i.e. health screening, health education, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements.
  • Implements required screening procedures and ensures compliance with state and District immunization standards.
  • Develops and implements health care plans for students, collaborating with families and medical professionals.
  • Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of alerting them to any changes in student health and/or referring students for further medical/emotional intervention as needed.
  • Helps prevent and control communicable disease through education, examinations, and  exclusion of affected students in accordance with established public health guidelines. 
  • Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, records (i.e. mandated screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
  • Maintains confidential clinical records and submit reports as required by law.
  • Collaborates with administration, staff, students and families to facilitate risk management of staff and student exposure to blood borne pathogens and other communicable diseases potentially transmissible within the District. 
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, including IEP’s, for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills/knowledge.
  • Performs home visits and/or hospital visits for the purpose of verifying student status.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (i.e. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, internal audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Provides training on a variety of health related subjects (i.e. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, etc.).

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving information or sharing information and expertise with students, colleagues and parents/guardians.
  • Confers regularly with immediate supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required

Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree (BSN). School-based nursing experience preferred

 

Skills

Demonstrates command of basic computer skills including Google, Word, and spreadsheet development. Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred. Medically trained to carry out physician-prescribed orders for medical procedures. Medically trained to recognize signs and symptoms of potential health problems (example:  medication reaction, respiratory difficulty). Must be alert to mental and physical handicaps (e.g. autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy) and the capabilities of students and react in a sensitive and helpful way to situations in the classroom and school setting. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling. Excellent secretarial/clerical skills, including typing, filing, organizing and basic arithmetic calculation.

 

Knowledge

Knowledge of core nursing skills. Knowledge of Oregon Public Health laws, preferred. Knowledge of current best practices in health management focusing on the K-12 age group.

 

Abilities

Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. Ability to deliver professional development to front line staff regarding delivering first aid and basic medical and emergency support to students. Ability to share technical medical information to non-medically trained staff. Work harmoniously with others. Work and communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job. Work independently, without supervision, and with minimum oral/written instructions. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Maintain confidentiality of student records. Meet schedules and deadlines. Read/interpret/apply rules, regulations and policies. 



Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required

Possess a current Oregon State Board of Nursing Licensure or ability to obtain such licensure. Pre-employment criminal justice fingerprint clearance and criminal background check. Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid first aid and CPR card. Valid Oregon driver’s license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to physically interact with students who are aggressive, emotional and/or unpredictable in their reactions. The employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally may be very loud. The work environment may be fast paced and emotionally demanding.
