DESCRIPTION
Union and non-union actors wanted for a two-week workshop and staged reading of ROJA, a new musical by Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman. Directed by Florencia Cuenca. Produced by SpeakEasy Stage Company and Somerled Arts.
Fusing traditional, Mexican folk music and Mestizo folklore, Roja is a new twist on the Little Red Riding Hood story. Roja and her mother live on a struggling farm at the edge of the desert in Northern Mexico. When Roja rescues a mischievous, magical coyote, he offers her the chance to see her father again. What follows is an enchanting journey of love, loss, and resilience, set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution.
Workshop dates in Boston September 28 – October 11, 2026. All contracts are local hires.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
For the first round of auditions, please submit a video audition – one song selection (32 bars) – contemporary material, with melody and groove that showcases range. Please also send a copy of your headshot and resume, along with your Equity status. Send all materials to [email protected].
All submissions must be received by Thursday, July 23rd at 5pm. In-person callbacks to follow in Boston.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
ROJA – A fourteen-year-old Mexican girl who is dealing with the loss of her father. (Role will be cast 18 TPY)
MAMÁ – Roja’s mother. She is solely responsible for tending the family farm after her husband has passed. Three years after the loss of her husband, she is still stricken with grief.
COYOTE – The shape-shifting god of music, dancing, and mischief. Often depicted with a mustache in human form. A mixture of charro, norteño, and mariachi. (Also plays PAPA)
DON SECO – The wealthy landowner who has allowed the Flores family to work the land since Roja was born.
MAN – Plays CROW 1 and 3, CAMPESINO 1. CROW is the spirit of logic and wisdom. They are a legion of thousands in the form of only one.
LA SEÑORA DE LOS HUESOS – The queen of the underworld. (Also plays CROW 2 and 4)
