Actors for By Any Other Name - a world premiere musical

DESCRIPTION

Union and non-union actors wanted for SpeakEasy Stage Company’s world premiere production of BY ANY OTHER NAME, a new musical by Deborah Zoe Laufer (Book & Lyrics) and Daniel Green (Music & Additional Lyrics). Directed by M. Bevin O’Gara.

By Any Other Name is a contemporary musical that reimagines Shakespeare’s young lovers by thrusting nine of his most iconic heroines into a magical forest. Guided by the three witches from Macbeth, characters from As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream collide as they confront love, jealousy, friendship, grief, and self-definition. As alliances shift and old scripts fail them, the girls question the roles written for them by men, parents, and tradition.

Rehearsals April 13 – May 6, 2027. Performances run May 7 – 29, 2027. Potential extension May 30 – June 5, 2027. All contracts are Boston local hires.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

For the first round of auditions, please submit a video audition – one song selection (60-90 seconds) – contemporary material, with melody and groove that showcases range.

NOTE: If you have already auditioned for By Any Other Name (through SpeakEasy’s EPAs or for the workshop production this summer), it is not necessary to submit again.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

ROSALIND 18, high mix. Winning in every way, if a little self-absorbed.

CELIA 16, strong singer, mix/belt. Always in Rosalind’s shadow. Speaks directly to the audience.

HERMIA 17, mezzo. Small and feisty.

HELENA 17, soprano. Tall and a bit of a drama queen.

OPHELIA, 16, soprano. Terribly damaged. Really needs a friend.

JULIET, 13, strong belt. Impulsive, passionate, and ready for a fight.

VIOLA/CESARIO (they/them) 17, strong singer, mix/belt. Smart and funny, but lonely. Searching for who they are and where they belong. Speaks directly to the audience.

[NOTE: Roles will be cast 18 TPY (to play younger).]

DEMETRIUS, baritenor. Tries to be macho.

LYSANDER, baritenor. A little slow on the up-take.

THE THREE WITCHES — Three fabulous, older beings who know the ways of the world.

HAZEL, mezzo. Imperious.

ASPEN, strong belt. Sassy.

MYRTLE, soprano. Sweet and anxious. A romantic.
