JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: School Social Worker
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Director of Student Services
Position Summary
The School Social Worker supports student success by addressing social, emotional, environmental, and attendance-related barriers that impact learning. This position collaborates with school staff, families, and community partners to provide interventions, connect students to resources, and support a safe and supportive school environment. The School Social Worker plays an important role in the district’s student support framework, including attendance intervention, crisis response, and family engagement.
Essential Responsibilities
Student Support and Intervention
- Provide social work services to support student well-being, school engagement, and academic success.
- Assist school staff in identifying and addressing social, emotional, behavioral, and environmental factors affecting student learning.
- Support attendance improvement efforts, including home visits, family engagement, and collaboration with school teams regarding truancy interventions and court documentation.
- Provide crisis intervention and support for students and families when needed.
- Assist in the prevention of student dropout through early identification and intervention strategies.
Collaboration and Family Engagement
- Serve as a liaison between schools, families, and community agencies to coordinate services and resources.
- Connect students and families with community supports including counseling services, healthcare, food assistance, housing support, and other social services.
- Assist school teams in developing strategies to support students experiencing challenges outside of the school environment.
Student Services Compliance
- Assist school personnel in identifying, documenting, and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with state law and district policy.
- Maintain documentation and case records related to services provided.
- Maintain required verification records for students in foster care or group home placements as required by state regulations.
McKinney-Vento
Serve as a liaison for students experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act for assigned schools by:
- Identifying students experiencing homelessness and ensuring immediate school enrollment.
- Coordinating transportation to the student’s school of origin when required.
- Connecting families with essential resources such as food, clothing, school supplies, and healthcare services.
- Monitoring student attendance and engagement to promote school stability.
- Assisting with dispute resolution and maintaining required program data and reporting.
- Providing training to school staff regarding the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness.
- Lead in the budget process, purchases, ordering and documentation of grants and funding for students under McKinney-Vento students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Social Work or related behavioral science field preferred; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with at least one year of relevant experience; OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license required.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of school social work practices, crisis intervention, and child welfare procedures.
- Knowledge of school and community resources available to support students and families.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to maintain confidential records and manage multiple student cases.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practices and student support frameworks.

Working Condtions
Work is performed primarily in school and office environments with routine local travel for home visits, school meetings, and court appearances. The position may require lifting items up to twenty (20) pounds and managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
