SEASONAL WASTEWATER OPERATOR
PUBLIC WORKS DEPT
Pay Grade PT4
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the Wastewater Division Manager, operates and maintains the city's wastewater treatment plant and collection lines in order to clean and process sewage and wastewater.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Safety Systems. Responsible for monitoring gauges, meters and controls at the wastewater treatment plant. Accurately records readings from meters and gauges and keeps legible records.
Oversees the placement of signs, barricades and other traffic control devices around work sites to protect employees and the public.
Wastewater Systems. Performs duties in preliminary treatment, primary sedimentation, trickling filter and ultraviolet disinfection operations. Recognize and report changes in normal operations to the Senior Operator.
Maintains sludge thickening, digestion and disposal processes.
Takes plant samples as required by the Division of Water Quality.
Equipment Operation. Operates process equipment, electrical controls, valves, pumps, sludge pumping and maintains sludge depth in clarifiers.
Performs visual inspection of plant process and equipment.
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy equipment including but not limited to the following:
- Loaders
- Backhoes and Trackhoes
- Forklifts
- Vactor Jet Trucks
- Video Truck
- Dump Trucks
- Pumps
- Blowers
- Air Compressors
- Jack Hammers
- Saws
- Grinders
- Wrenches
- Hammers
- Shovels
Detects and reports mechanical problems with equipment to the Fleet Division.
Miscellaneous Duties as Required. Is responsible for the resolution of citizen requests/complaints related to wastewater, Must ensure that the Wastewater Division deals with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances.
Assists in the maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Physical Demands. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity. Must be capable of moving over varied terrain, frequently climbing ladders, frequently stooping, bending and be capable of lifting 100 lbs.
Working Conditions. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicular traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.
Hazards. Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. May be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High school or equivalent.
- Experience: Related experience helpful.
- CPR Certification: Within one year of hire date.
- Utah CDL: Class B, may be required to obtain Class A.
- Forklift Certification: Within one year of hire date.
- Flagging Certification: Within one year of hire date.
- Traffic Control Technician Certification: Within one year of hire date.
- Unrestricted Wastewater Collections or Treatment: Class I and II within two years of hire date.
Mandatory for applicant to work on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week within a rotated schedule. Applicant must be able to respond to emergencies in 20 minutes.
