What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hardware Engineering Manager, Robotics position at Spacer Robotics?
Spacer Robotics is building autonomous, non-humanoid robotic systems to construct infrastructure in extreme environments—from lunar bases to next-gen terrestrial job sites. Our vision is to disrupt the $13.5 trillion global construction industry by pioneering a new Deep Tech philosophy that blends robotics, AI, and systems engineering at the frontier.
We’re looking for a Hardware Engineering Manager to lead the design, prototyping, and scaling of Spacer’s robotic platforms. This is a leadership role that combines hands-on engineering with team building, driving the development of mechanical, electrical, and mechatronic systems that perform reliably in extreme environments. You’ll work closely with software, controls, and product teams to ensure that Spacer’s robots are robust, manufacturable, and field-ready.
- Lead the hardware engineering team across mechanical, electrical, and mechatronic systems.
- Own the design, prototyping, and validation of robotic platforms from concept to deployment.
- Define hardware roadmaps and ensure alignment with autonomy, controls, and product milestones.
- Establish best practices for CAD design, prototyping, DFM (Design for Manufacturing), and testing.
- Oversee system integration and ensure seamless collaboration with firmware and software teams.
- Manage vendor relationships, supply chain selection, and manufacturing partners.
- Drive reliability, durability, and safety testing for robots operating in unstructured environments.
- Mentor and grow a multidisciplinary hardware engineering team.
- Track budgets, resources, and timelines for hardware deliverables.
- 5 years of experience in hardware, mechanical, or mechatronics engineering, with 2 years in a leadership or management role.
- Proven experience taking complex electro-mechanical systems from prototype to production.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design, materials, and structural analysis.
- Experience with electrical systems, sensors, actuators, and power electronics.
- Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with rapid prototyping, machining, and fabrication techniques.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to balance technical depth and team leadership.
- Experience in robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or industrial machinery.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering and environmental testing.
- Understanding of system integration across hardware, firmware, and software.
- Background in supply chain strategy, vendor management, and contract manufacturing.
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
