The Work You’ll Do

Great fits for this role: sharp legal minds who have a love for legal research.  Not so great fits for this role: lawyers who are interested in trial law (there's no jury here!) or folks who are interested in being part of an internal corporate legal team.  We have a team like that at Sovos, this is not it.  The Regulatory Analysis & Design department is a highly credentialed and systematic team, composed of attorneys, specialists and systems experts who provide the regulatory intelligence that powers our suite of products.  As a Junior Regulatory Counsel, you will be primarily tasked with providing substantive research and scrutiny of transaction tax laws. You will provide the legal research behind the content in our tax calculation and compliance engines, and deliver high quality, detailed tax study.

More specifically, you will:

  • Proactively and continually monitor legislative and regulatory developments in the field of transaction tax worldwide, with special emphasis on how such changes may impact Sovos’ systems
  • Establish the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on Sovos’ systems and provide detailed, timely and accurate information regarding those changes to the Tax Content Team, in order to include those changes in the Sovos systems
  • Apply multiple research related tools and techniques and be able to convey legal findings using appropriate citations clearly and accurately
  • Explain complex tax rules in clear language for tax and non-tax professionals both internally and externally
  • Develop and foster professional relationships with high-level tax administrators around the globe
  • Research and evaluate client inquiries regarding the taxability of specific transactions under applicable state or national law and then provide a clear and detailed reply

What We Need From You

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to the bar in at least one state (pending bar admissions are acceptable)
  • Willingness to learn the complexities of the tax and regulatory landscape worldwide
  • Self-directed learner, personally accountable for your own professional development
  • Passionate about accuracy
  • Able to clearly and accurately synthesize and convey information
  • Additional language skills a plus
  • Due to federal contracts – the successful candidate will be asked to clear a background check and drug test before hire
