Overview:
Listen to voice recordings that physicians and other healthcare professionals make and convert them into written reports.
Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interpret and transcribe the dictation into patient history, exam notes, operative reports, referral letters, discharge summaries and other documents.
- Review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software, making sure that the transcription is correct, complete and consistent in style.
- Identify inconsistencies, errors and missing information within a report that could compromise patient care.
- Follow up with the healthcare provider to ensure accuracy of reports.
- Submit health records for approval.
- Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements.
- Review transcription documents to identify and correct any errors and check with healthcare providers to obtain the correct information.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Postsecondary education in medical transcription preferred.
- Ability to transcribe dictation required.
- Ability to use proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure as well as a strong knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and speech recognition software required.
- One or more years’ experience working with medical records preferred.
