Position Overview

Upward Bound is a federal grant-funded project that provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The project provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. The Academic Coordinator is an integral part of the Upward Bound team. This position is responsible for creating and delivering academic enrichment programs that ensure college readiness, record keeping and for coordinating program recruitment efforts within the assigned schools.

DUTIES

  • Design and coordinate tutoring, academic, cultural and other supportive services for all program participants that aids in high school achievement.
  • Coordinate and conduct group advising sessions for new program participants
  • Assist with planning college visits during the academic year and with residential week in the summer
  • Assist with in-person and online recruitment workshops at high school and community sites
  • Maintain and update student records and information including Academic Progress Plans and input case notes into the data system
  • Assist in general planning and operations of the Upward Bound Summer Program to include planning and creating schedules and making classroom reservations
  • Actively build educational relationships with students, parents and school officials to promote the values of the program
  • Maintain and input accurate data on attendance of program participants into data system
  • Collect both quantitative and qualitative data related to student progress. Provide necessary data for the program’s annual performance reports to the Department of Education

Additional Duties

  • Coordinate the annual newsletter
  • Maintain accurate paper and database records
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pre-college preparation, college admissions and financial aid information
  • Must be available to work extended hours, including Saturdays and evening hours
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum education, experience, licenses, certifications, and competencies (knowledge, skills, and behaviors) which are necessary for performing the listed duties. List first those which can be objectively measured.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Human Services or a related field
  • Experience aiding and advising secondary students on entering post-secondary education
  • Proven ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with others including high school students, campus personnel and students, parents and colleagues
  • Proficiency in computer applications including the Microsoft and Google suite of programs
  • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.

Further preferred qualifications which are also desirable for performing the listed duties.

  • At least one-year experience in secondary school advising, teaching or pre-college outreach
  • TRIO experience
  • Knowledge of Texas High School curriculum
  • Verbal proficiency in Spanish

Additional Information

Starting annual salary: $41,371.20. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting annual salary.

This position is funded through a grant and is contingent upon the continued availability of grant funding. Employment may be affected if funding is reduced, discontinued, or otherwise unavailable.
