Position Summary
Southwestern College invites applications for the position of Adjunct Pharmacology Instructor in the Physician Associate (PA) Program. This position is responsible for delivering instruction in one or more courses within the program’s three-course pharmacology sequence: Pharmacology I, Pharmacology II, and Pharmacology III. Each course carries four credit hours and is delivered during the didactic phase of the PA curriculum.

The successful candidate will provide graduate-level instruction in clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy, focusing on mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, medication safety, and evidence-based prescribing. The program may appoint one instructor to teach the entire pharmacology sequence or multiple instructors to teach individual courses based on expertise and availability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures and instructional activities in assigned pharmacology course(s).
  • Provide instruction in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug classifications, and therapeutic applications.
  • Teach principles of safe prescribing, medication management, and pharmacologic decision-making.
  • Develop and administer course assessments, including examinations and applied case-based learning activities.
  • Maintain course materials and student communications within the institution’s learning management system.
  • Provide guidance and academic support to students as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with PA program faculty to ensure alignment with program learning outcomes and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in course evaluation and continuous quality improvement activities.

Instructional Content Areas

Depending on course assignment, instructional content may include the following areas:

  • Pharmacology I
  • Principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • Antimicrobial pharmacology and infectious disease therapeutics
  • Dermatologic and hematologic pharmacology
  • Medication safety and prescription writing
  • Pharmacology II
  • Cardiovascular pharmacology
  • Neurologic pharmacology
  • Rheumatologic and musculoskeletal pharmacology
  • Gastrointestinal, renal, and genitourinary pharmacology
  • Pharmacology III
  • Pulmonary pharmacology
  • Endocrine pharmacology including diabetes management
  • Pediatric and women’s health pharmacology
  • Psychiatric pharmacology and palliative care

Note: Content subject to change based on curriculum sequencing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed pharmacist in good standing or eligible for licensure.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical pharmacy practice experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy.
  • Ability to effectively teach pharmacologic principles to graduate-level health profession students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education or health professions education.
  • Experience teaching pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, or therapeutics.
  • Board certification (e.g., BCPS) or other specialty pharmacy credential.
  • Experience with case-based or clinically integrated teaching methods.
  • Familiarity with physician associate/physician assistant education.

Appointment Details
This is a part-time, non-tenure track faculty appointment. Contract will be renewed annually. Each pharmacology course carries four credit hours. Instructors may be assigned to teach one, two, or all three pharmacology courses depending on program needs and instructor expertise.

Preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach in person at the Southwestern College campus in Winfield, Kansas. Remote candidates will be considered based on qualifications and instructional needs of the program.

Compensation

Adjunct instructors are compensated on a per-course basis. Compensation includes course preparation, instruction, student evaluation, and course administration responsibilities.

Compensation range: $4,000 – $5,000 per course, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
