Summary:
The Laboratory Technologist III role is responsible for performing and analyzing the results of complex scientific tests on blood and bodily fluids in a high complexity testing lab. Performs laboratory testing to include serology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, point-of-care and molecular NAT testing on donor, proficiency, environmental, employee, and reference lab samples. Responsible to cut frozen section biopsies and upload the biopsy slides for pathologist viewing. The laboratory technologists will collaborate with leadership on patient data, reporting and documentation of all Quality Control for instrumentation. Follows all operating procedures and performs all maintenance on equipment.
Please note that the anticipated schedule for this role is Sunday through Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Communication
- Provide continuous feedback for equipment performance and workflow.
- Respond and direct client inquiries, when appropriate.
- Ability to assist with on-the-job training for Laboratory Technologists.
- Review test packet data for GDP before filing and notifies Manager of Laboratory Services of any issues.
Time Management
- Follow procedures, perform any of the tests within the laboratory specialties including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, molecular, HLA, and histology processing for donors.
- Perform equipment maintenance.
- Assist in inventory and ordering needs.
- Review HLA results in a timely manner to assist the Lead/General Supervisor of HLA, is qualified.
Attention to Detail
- Calculating the results of the tests performed, if necessary.
- Recognize basic analyzer functions.
- Evaluate reagents, samples, controls, and calibrators according to established criteria.
- Appropriately cut and label different biopsy specimens. Stain cover slips and upload biopsy slides for the pathologist to perform their review of the specimen.
- Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Utilize laboratory information systems (ILS) or other methods to report patient results accurately and effectively.
- Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of tests.
- Assist validation procedures on new testing platforms.
- Assist in the review process within the lab including test data.
- Complete logs and forms for QC/Maintenance/Remedial action.
- Assist with handling desk audits.
- Assist with CAP checklist oversight.
- Prepare reagents, onboarding new lots of reagents and controls.
- Provide technical assistance.
Problem Solving
- Document all corrective actions taken when the test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Notify management personnel and vendors, when appropriate.
- Collect data and objective evidence for Variance Investigations and implement CAPAs.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the purpose of the role.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology is required. Master’s degree is preferred. OR 60 semester hours to include either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology, or medical technology). OR Associated Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. A combination of alternative education and experience may be considered in lieu of the formal education requirements.
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHO) certificate is preferred.
- Must fulfill all qualifications and essential duties of a Laboratory Technologist II.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical or OPO lab performing high complexity testing recognized under CLIA standard 493.1461(2)(ii).
- Current Driver’s License is required and maintained with an acceptable driving record as defined by STA policy.
Compliance:
- This position is classified as OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Category I. Employees in this role routinely perform job duties that may involve direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required at all times.
- Employees will receive mandatory training on bloodborne pathogens, safe work practices, and proper PPE usage. Employees must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies.
- This role requires compliance with HIPAA and all confidentiality standards related to patient, donor, employee, and organizational information. Employees must safeguard all confidential information and disclose it only as permitted by law and organizational policy.
