The Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) is responsible for overseeing the safe and effective setup, maintenance, and removal of temporary traffic control (TTC) zones for construction, utility, and special event projects. This role ensures all traffic control operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations—including MUTCD and DOT standards. The TCS acts as a field leader, coordinating with crews, clients, and agencies to maintain safety, traffic flow, and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Traffic Control Oversight & Supervision

  • Supervise the setup, operation, and removal of traffic control devicesin accordance withapproved traffic control plans (TCPs)
  • Ensure work zonescomply withMUTCD, DOT, and other applicable standards and permits
  • Conduct pre-job site inspections and post-job evaluations for safety and quality assurance
  • Direct and support field crews, including flaggers and traffic control technicians

Planning & Communication

  • Interpret traffic control plans and make real-time decisions to adjust layouts for field conditions
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, inspectors, and enforcement personnel on-site
  • Coordinate with dispatch, operations, andlogisticsteams to ensuretimelyjob execution
  • Provide daily updates to supervisorsregardingcrew performance, safety concerns, and project status

Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct tailgate safety meetings and enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Identifyand mitigate hazards in active work zones
  • Complete required paperwork, including daily field reports, incident reports, and equipment checklists
  • Maintain knowledge of current safety regulations, laws, and traffic control procedures

Equipment & Crew Management

  • Oversee the loading, transportation, setup, and maintenance of traffic control devices (cones, signs, arrow boards, crash trucks, etc.)
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members on proper traffic control procedures and safety protocols
  • Report equipment needs, damages, or maintenance issues to yard or fleet management

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid Traffic Control Supervisor certification (state-specific, e.g., ATSSA or equivalent)
  • 2 years of experience in traffic control or construction with at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean MVR; CDL preferred
  • Ability to pass background check, drug screen, and DOT physical
  • Strong understanding of MUTCD guidelines, state DOT standards, and local permit requirements
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift 50 lbs

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced and safety-critical work environment
  • Irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call availability may berequired
