About the Job

The Safe Haven Courtroom Advocate/Outreach Coordinator to provide advocacy services to victims of sexual assault, and stalking in the area of Jackson, Harmon, Greer, Tillman, and Kiowa counties in southwest Oklahoma for the STOP Violence Against Women Act Grant, also referred to as VAWA. Helps coordinate and maintain community outreach activities and collaborations, while also providing direct support to victims seeking protective orders, both emergency and permanent. The position reports directly to the Safe Haven Program Director. The position is non-exempt.

 

Base Pay:  $17.50/hr.

                    1300 hours per year – $22,750

Safe Haven is a shelter for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking and is located in Altus. The program operates a crisis hotline and provides services to both clients who are in shelter and clients who need advocacy support. The program is accredited by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as an advocate for victims of sexual assault while filing police reports, petitioning for protective orders, court hearing proceedings, child welfare cases, and other advocacy opportunities, as available.
  • Maintains accurate client records and funding paperwork. Prepares a monthly report summarizing activites. Enters data into the Empower DB database.
  • Works with in-clients and out-clients on safety and empowerment planning according to STOP Violence Against Women Grant requirements, OAG standards, and VOCA standards. Facilitates weekly education and support groups for clients according to OAG standards.
  • Assists clients to obtain identifying documentation such as social security cards, birth certificates, and driver’s license or state identification.
  • Attends weekly intervention team meetings to brief other Safe Haven staff on each open case. Attends scheduled staff meetings. Develops training for staff to ensure that OAG standards are met. Must be able to deliver training effectively to clients and be able to measure outcomes of the training.
  • Provides training to local agencies and the community on domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking issues, role of the courtroom advocate, and Safe Haven services. Obtains and maintains certifications as required.
  • Conducts outreach events to inform the public about services. Works closely with the Program Director to develop events.
  • Coordinates and conducts CCRT and SART meetings for all five counties to promote a community response approach to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Adheres to the ROMA principles of performance management. Knows program outcome measures and coordinates work to meet the targets. This includes adhering to financial management procedures.
  • Attends required trainings, and meets required annual training hours. Obtains and maintains certifications as required to serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, as well as batterers for related services. Documents training according to the OAG regulations.
  • Responds within 30 minutes of call to JCMH emergency room to advocate on behalf of victims of sexual assault. This includes nights and weekends.
  • Practices professionalism and code of ethics standards. Uses a trauma-informed approach to provide services. Is knowledgeable of laws regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Qualifications   

  • Prefer a Bachelor degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field. Will consider an equivalent of education and experience working with victims of sexual assault. Knowledge of the cycle and dynamics of domestic abuse and its intersection with substance abuse, mental health, and other co-occurring disorders. Must complete the on-line VATT training.
  • Must remain free from domestic violence situations. Must be able to meet the fitness requirements to work with victims. Having a passion to assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking is a vital aspect of this role.
  • Oklahoma driver’s license and transportation with state minimum vehicle insurance.
  • Technical skills in computer applications (Word, Power Point, Excel, Empower DB).
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively. Experience in public speaking and providing group presentations.
  • Routine travel to the five service counties is anticipated. Some travel for training may require overnight trips.
  • Must be able to pass the background check, which may include fingerprinting. Background checks are performed periodically as required by regulations.
  • SOCAG is a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug testing required, and employees are subject to drug testing during their employment according to established policies.

Working Conditions

  • The shelter/crisis hotline is a 24/7/365 operation with all team members working as needed to ensure the facility is appropriately staffed to meet victims’ needs. Physical requirements include being able to climb house stairs to perform designated safety checks on the second floor and to respond to any client or facilities emergencies. Mental requirements include the ability to work with people who have been traumatized, the ability to deescalate situations between clients, and the ability to assist someone in crisis, both on the phone and in person, to help get them to safety. Calm under pressure is required. Provides routine quality assurance.
  • Cleans resident rooms, bathrooms, offices, and kitchen as assigned. May be tasked with preparing meals or assisting in meal prep.
  • Must have flexible availability to work a variety of shifts and be able to respond to JCMH within 30 minutes to provide advocacy for victims. Includes nights and weekends as assigned. Staff are assigned to be on call for weekends and holidays on a rotating basis to assist with client pick up and/or transportation to another facility.
  • Must be able to provide trauma-informed care. One of the most important aspects of victim services is avoiding further harm to the victim.
  • Confidentiality of clients and the shelter location is an absolute must. Ethical conduct is expected at all times.
  • The community provides donations to the shelter. No staff member is allowed to take donations for personal use or to trade items. Additionally, staff are not authorized to give shelter belongings to clients upon exit, except those items that would be considered personal use.
  • Travels as assigned to provide services in other counties of the service area and for training. Travel may include some overnight training.
