This role will produce Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (“P&IDs”), general arrangement drawings (“GAs”), fabrication and shop drawings, 3D models, and as-built drawings using AutoDesk Inventor and associated drafting tools.
The CAD Designer will also prepare submittal drawings, support estimating with take-offs, perform plan reviews, coordinate with third-party fabrication vendors, and maintain SWFP’s CAD standards, templates, and drawing libraries. This individual contributor role is designed to increase the speed, accuracy, and volume of SWFP’s design output, enabling the Design and Engineering team to focus on higher-level engineering work as SWFP continues to grow.
Key Responsibilities:
1) Engineering Drawings and Drafting Production
- Create and modify P&IDs, GAs, shop and fabrication drawings, and 3D models.
- Produce as-built drawings based on field updates, redlines, and project changes.
- Ensure drawings comply with project requirements, industry best practices, and SWFP standards.
2) Submittal Preparation
- Prepare submittal drawings in support of SWFP design packages.
- Coordinate with the Design and Engineering Manager and Project Management to ensure submittals are accurate, complete, and delivered on time.
- Coordinate with the Estimating and Procurement teams and the Design and Engineering Manager to ensure submittals align with estimates, procurement requirements, and overall design direction.
3) Estimating and Technical Support
- Assist with estimating by providing take-offs.
- Support the Project Management team by assisting with plan reviews.
- Support design efforts by producing required technical illustrations or drawing revisions.
4) CAD Standards and Quality Control
- Own and maintain SWFP’s CAD standards, templates, title blocks, layers, and part libraries.
- Enforce consistency and accuracy across all drawings produced by the Design and Engineering team.
- Recommend and implement improvements to drafting processes, tools, and workflows.
5) Vendor Coordination and Fabrication Support
- Provide fabrication vendors with the drawings and details required to build SWFP systems and components.
- Coordinate drawing changes and revisions in response to vendor feedback, fabrication constraints, or field conditions.
- Ensure alignment between design intent and fabrication output.
6) Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work as part of the Design and Engineering team to support drawing production and engineering tasks.
- Collaborate with Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations to support design deliverables and project readiness.
- Participate in internal reviews to ensure accuracy and completeness of drawing packages.
Expected Outcomes (First 12-24 Months):
1) Increase the speed and accuracy of drawing production to reduce bottlenecks on the Design and Engineering team.
2) Improve the quality, consistency, and reliability of SWFP drawing packages and submittals.
3) Establish and maintain updated CAD standards, templates, and drawing libraries.
4) Strengthen alignment between design intent, fabrication drawings, and vendor execution.
5) Support estimating and project readiness with timely and accurate drafting support.
Qualifications:
1) 3 years of experience in CAD drafting, mechanical design, or fabrication drawing production.
2) Strong experience with AutoDesk Inventor, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office tools.
3) Background in mechanical, manufacturing, fabrication, or industrial design preferred.
4) Experience preparing P&IDs, GAs, shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and as-builts required.
5) Drafting or CAD certificates preferred; engineering, architectural, or construction degrees are a plus but not required.
6) Strong attention to detail with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
7) Proven ability to work collaboratively with design, operations, fabrication, and project teams.
