What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Internship - Prevention Program position at Southwest Behavioral & Health Services?
Southwest Behavioral & Health Services (SBH) is offering Peer Support Specialist Training for students enrolled in a qualified school. This program, hosted by our Prevention Program, will be guided by SB&H professionals to help you gain and cultivate skills and knowledge to become Peer Support Certified. This invaluable hands-on experience will empower you to become an effective contributor within your community and workplace.
Learning Experience:
A peer support specialist is a person with "lived experience" who has been trained to support those who struggle with mental health, psychological trauma, or substance use. Their personal experience of these challenges provide peer support specialists with expertise that professional training cannot replicate. Throughout your training, you will engage in discussions and exchanges about experiences, exploring how peers manage their professional responsibilities alongside their personal experiences. Topics covered may encompass self-care, setting boundaries, maintaining work-life balance, fostering empowerment, addressing stigma, and overcoming learned helplessness.

Requirements and Expectations:

Degree program must require an internship and qualify for credit hours.

Be currently attending or enrolled in an approved college or university.
- Adhere to agency work hours, policies, procedures and rules governing professional behavior
- Student is expected to self-manage school requirements.
- Adhere to work at the direction of their SBH supervisor.
- Interns must be able to attend SBH required Peer Support certification and field training
- Student must attend and actively participate in the all required in office and field training.
- Student must participate in discussion and role-plays utilizing my personal experiences and sharing my recovery story.
- Student understands that they are not guaranteed employment or a volunteer position as a result of participating in the training.
Clearance Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Pass Background check and Drug test
- Must have/obtain Fingerprint Clearance Card (not paid my SBH)
