SouthSide is seeking a part-time School Social Worker to support students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. The School Social Worker will work collaboratively with students, families, teachers, service providers, and school leadership to ensure students are safe, supported, and able to fully access learning.
Our Mission
SouthSide Elementary Charter School provides a diverse group of Providence kindergarten through fifth-grade students with a solid step toward college and community leadership. Students learn to read, write, think logically, and problem-solve on grade level within a curriculum that emphasizes academic rigor, excellence, and community engagement in an extended school day and school year.
Position Summary
The part-time School Social Worker provides direct counseling, crisis support, family outreach, referral coordination, and consultation to support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of students. This role includes supporting students with IEP-mandated counseling services, collaborating with the MTSS team, assisting with behavior and attendance concerns, and helping connect families to community-based resources.
The School Social Worker reports to the Director/Head of School or designee.
Key Responsibilities
Student Counseling and Support
Provide individual and small-group counseling to students.
Deliver mandated counseling services for students with IEPs, as assigned.
Support students with social-emotional, behavioral, attendance, and adjustment needs.
Develop appropriate counseling goals and monitor student progress.
Provide crisis intervention and short-term stabilization support as needed.
Maintain a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for students.
Special Education, MTSS, and Student Support
Collaborate with the special education team to support students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and behavior-related needs.
Provide documentation for students receiving counseling services.
Participate in MTSS, student support, and/or referral meetings as appropriate.
Consult with teachers and staff on strategies to support students’ social-emotional and behavioral needs.
Support behavior intervention planning when appropriate.
Assist with referrals for evaluations, outside counseling, community services, or additional student supports.
Family and Community Engagement
Communicate with families regarding student needs, concerns, and available supports.
Connect students and families with outside agencies, mental health providers, and community resources.
Maintain partnerships with external service providers when appropriate.
Assist families in navigating school-based and community-based supports.
Facilitate parent workshops or family support sessions based on identified needs and availability.
Crisis, Safety, and Mandated Reporting
Respond to student crises in collaboration with school leadership and appropriate staff.
Follow all school safety, confidentiality, and mandated reporting procedures.
Report suspected child abuse or neglect to DCYF as required by law.
Maintain appropriate documentation related to crisis response, referrals, and student services.
Support re-entry planning for students returning from hospitalization, extended absence, or crisis intervention when applicable.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, support staff, related service providers, and families.
Participate in team meetings, professional development, family engagement events, and school-wide initiatives as appropriate for the part-time schedule.
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records in accordance with school policy, FERPA, IDEA, and applicable Rhode Island regulations.
Demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, confidentiality, and cultural responsiveness.
Qualifications
Required:
Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution.
Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Social Worker in Rhode Island.
Experience supporting children, families, or school-aged students.
Strong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
Commitment to equity, confidentiality, and student-centered practice.
Preferred:
Experience working in a school setting.
Experience supporting students with IEPs and/or mandated counseling services.
Knowledge of MTSS, trauma-informed practices, child development, and community-based mental health resources.

This is a part-time position. Specific days and hours will be determined based on student service needs and the selected candidate’s availability.
