Position Overview
SouthSide Elementary Charter School is seeking a caring, collaborative, and highly effective Part-Time Multilingual Learner (MLL) Teacher to join our instructional team.
This position plays a critical role in supporting multilingual learners through both Content-Based Instruction (CBI) and, when appropriately certified, English Language Development (ELD) services.
Working closely with classroom teachers, the MLL Coordinator, special educators, interventionists, and school leadership, the MLL Teacher helps ensure multilingual learners have equitable access to grade-level curriculum while developing academic English proficiency.
The successful candidate will embrace co-teaching, collaborative planning, and evidence-based instructional practices that support language acquisition across all content areas.
This position is scheduled for up to 25 hours per week during the school year.
Essential ResponsibilitiesInstructional Support
- Provide high-quality instructional support for multilingual learners in grades K–5.
- Deliver push-in Content-Based Instruction (CBI) aligned to Rhode Island curriculum standards.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate language objectives into daily instruction.
- Use research-based sheltered instructional practices, including SIOP strategies, to support language development.
- Differentiate instruction based on students' English language proficiency levels and academic needs.
- Support student participation in Benchmark Advance, Eureka Math², Carolina Smithsonian Science, and Studies Weekly instruction.
English Language Development (ESOL/TESOL Certified Candidates)
Candidates holding a Rhode Island PK–12 ESOL/TESOL certification may also:
- Provide required pull-out English Language Development (ELD) instruction.
- Develop standards-aligned ELD lessons using the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework.
- Address all four language domains:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
- Monitor student language growth using WIDA and other district assessments.
Collaboration
- Co-plan with classroom teachers.
- Participate in grade-level team meetings as appropriate.
- Collaborate with interventionists, special educators, related service providers, and administrators.
- Communicate regularly with the MLL Coordinator regarding student progress and instructional needs.
- Partner with families to support multilingual learners whenever appropriate.
Student Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Monitor student progress using classroom assessments, WIDA data, i-Ready, and other available data sources.
- Assist teachers in interpreting language proficiency data.
- Help identify appropriate instructional supports and accommodations.
- Participate in MTSS discussions as requested.
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain all required documentation to ensure compliance with:
- Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE)
- Title III
- Federal and State multilingual learner requirements
Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining accurate service minute logs.
- Recording CBI and ELD instructional minutes.
- Monitoring student service schedules.
- Maintaining required student records.
- Assisting with ACCESS testing and other state assessments as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Experience working with Elementary aged school children K-5
- Experience with the K-12 RI Common Core Standards for K-5
- Experience writing and delivering lesson plans that are SIOP informed and contain all four domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- Experience co-teaching and working alongside General Education Teachers
- RI elementary teaching certification with either an MLL endorsement or
- a RI PK–12 ESOL Certification
- Demonstrated experience or training in co-teaching and sheltered instruction (e.g., SIOP).
- Excellent organizational skills for precise minute-tracking and compliance reporting
Preferred:
- 1 years of experience teaching multilingual learners in elementary school settings.
- Familiarity with WIDA ELD Standards sand lesson planning
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish).
Mandatory Requirements
Elementary Education (Grades 1–6) certification with one of the following:
- Dual/Bilingual Certification
- Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certification
- An MLL endorsement in Elementary Education (Grades 1–6)
Additionally, RI background check, fingerprinting, and TB clearance are required.
Weekly Schedule: up to 25 hours; combination of push-in CBI periods and/or pull-out ELD blocks, depending on certification.
