Welcome to Southshire Community School of North Bennington
Southshire Community School is an approved independent K through Eighth Grade school dedicated to serving the public by providing dynamic educational and cultural opportunities. Our 30-35-student population ranges from K to eighth grade, and students study in intentionally small, multi-grade classrooms within a multi-age learning community. This is a part-time position. An emergent and thematic curriculum is driven by the children’s interests and inquiries. Children at Southshire are supported in a culture of respect, progress at their own pace, and are held to expectations of excellence. We work closely with families to support each student’s goals. Our teaching team is highly collaborative and supportive of one another. Working together for the betterment of the whole community.
Special Educator Job Responsibilities:
Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) aligned with students' needs and postsecondary goals.
Attend all meetings relating to the Special Education IEP planning and implementation process.
Serve as the main point of contact for inter-school communication regarding Special Education
Acts as liaison between Southshire Community School and the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (SVSU)
Supervise and support a team of related service providers to ensure effective implementation of student programs.
Collaborate with families, community partners, and outside agencies to support students' access to resources and services.
Advocate for equitable opportunities for students with disabilities, ensuring access to academic, social, and extracurricular activities.
Act as a parent advocate, which includes meeting with parents, educating parents about special needs rights, and educating parents about Special Education terminology and methodology
Maintain accurate records, including but not limited to student progress, services, and family communication.
Participate in professional development to stay informed on best practices in special education, transition planning, and community partnerships.
Provide direct instruction in evidence-aligned literacy (reading, spelling, handwriting, writing) and math skills
Maintain accurate progress monitoring data to assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree in special education or a related field is required
Valid Vermont Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement; a provisional or emergency license may be considered, but preference is given to candidates who are licensed (or eligible for licensure) in Special Education in Vermont
Experience in developing and/or providing IEP case management
Working knowledge of the profiles of neurodivergent students and those who are well-versed in evidence-aligned practices (Wilson Reading Program, Orton Gillingham); or willing to be trained
Understanding and working knowledge of Vermont’s Special Education laws
Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
Salary : $45 - $60
