Requirements:
· Be at least 16 years of age or older
· Obtain and hold current certification in Professional Rescuer CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator
· Represent the Southington Community YMCA at all times in a positive manner
· Be thoroughly familiar with the YMCA Aquatic Program, rules, and regulations
· Be willing to continue with YMCA aquatic training
· Be dependable and reliable
· Have good organizational skills
Consistently provide friendly courteous assistance exceeding member expectations every day
· Maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness to perform in pool activities
· Be able to participate in class and set examples for participants
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and the Aquatics Coordinator, an instructor will be responsible for assuring the safety, well-being and enjoyment for all participants in his/her class
· Responsible for teaching the strokes by instructing, demonstrating and correcting individuals so that they learn to the best of their ability
· Swimming instructors should make and keep swimming a fun activity
· Teach in a professional, courteous manner
· Be attentive to all participants
· Eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards
· Maintain general pool rules
· An instructor must be wearing a swimsuit. A YMCA staff shirt is optional
· Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to shift start time and be on deck 5 minutes prior to class time with all necessary equipment set up and ready to use
· Take accurate daily attendance at the beginning of each class. Learn children’s names by the third class
· Be prepared to teach and know the subject of your instruction
· Get in the water and demonstrate! (Let your students know that you can swim)
· While the children are doing warm-ups, correct their strokes to avoid development of bad habits. Don’t just say it’s wrong – show them how to correct it. If you need help, ask the Director or Aquatics Coordinator
· Plan classes that are educational, challenging and appropriate for participants. Be imaginative, use manuals and create new ones
· Keep your record sheets up to date on each student. Make sure they are completely and accurately filled out and be responsible for their safe keeping
· Send home evaluation reports at the end of each session completed. Make sure you give positive, reinforcing comments about the progress the student made
· Never leave the deck or turn your back on your participants once your class has begun
· You are responsible for getting out all equipment needed for classes prior to class and neatly returning it after the classes are completed
· When unable to work, instructors are responsible for obtaining their own substitute. A sub sheet must be filled out and submitted to the Aquatics Coordinator for approval at least 24 hours prior to shift
· You are responsible for written lesson plans for a substitute when you are unable to work
· Attend all staff meeting and trainings. These meetings are mandatory and not attending will be reflected in your evaluation and scheduling of hours
· Keep informed of all changes in the schedule and upcoming events
· All notices will be placed in your mail slot (in staff office). Please read notices and act accordingly
· Assume all other duties and assignments as deemed appropriate by Aquatic Director(s) or any Professional Staff
· The Director(s) office is always open to you, but please respect it as a private office
· Attend a personal evaluation at least 1 time/year and be accountable for performance
· Teach in a manner that reflects the mission and philosophy of the YMCA
· Report any accidents or injuries immediately to the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator
· Fill out accident reports completely. They are located in the Aquatic office and on the pool wall
· During classes, socializing is not acceptable. Full attention should be on the class at all times
· Understand the YMCA Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and implement them in your daily activities
