Report To: Clinical Director

Job Type: Part-Time

Job Summary:

The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) OR Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) works on the continuum of care but can address areas that other professions are unable to. CPRS/CPSSs are expected to share personal experience, strength, and hope with clients to motivate and connect with them in a way that others may not be able to. CPRS/CPSSs work to get clients connected within their communities with positive support. Navigating professional boundaries is extremely important in peer recovery coaching.

Education and Experience, Certificates, and Licenses:

Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS):

  • High school diploma or jurisdictionally certified high school equivalency (e.g. GED).
  • Continuous, sustained one year of lived recovery and practical experience that must be verified by current and/or previous employers or an administrator of volunteer organizations.
  • Successful completion of 46-hour training from a South Carolina PSSCC Certified Training Center.
  • 500 hours of volunteer or paid experience specific to the four domains (Advocacy,

Mentoring/Education, Recovery Support, and Ethical Responsibility). Successful completion of the IC&RC written examination.

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Reliable transportation

Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS):

Duties and Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited to:

  • Provides peer support, sharing stories, personal feelings, information, and strategies for living well.
  • Takes the role of an advocate in a variety of areas including but not limited to: legal, vocational, educational, and/or treatment needs.
  • Identifies and cultivates a myriad of community-wide services and supports that are key to meeting the varying needs of those served.
  • Maintains official records and documents, complies with HIPAA/42CFR privacy laws, and ensures compliance with federal state, and local regulations.
  • Works closely with the Outreach Coordinator and provides outreach in the local area to promote the recovery coach services.
  • Connects individuals to personal and community supports necessary to live independently.
  • Assists individuals with obtaining recovery-oriented materials, attending recovery support meetings, and providing referrals, as necessary.
  • Provides peer support, sharing stories, personal feelings, information, and strategies for living well.
