Role Overview
The Directional Drill Operators and Locators play a vital role in executing underground installations safely and efficiently. This position requires expertise in operating Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment, directly contributing to the successful completion of projects that meet client specifications. You will collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure that drilling operations are conducted safely, effectively, and in alignment with SMCiS standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and similar heavy equipment in various conditions.
- Conduct pre-operational checks and routine maintenance on drilling equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Follow project plans and specifications to determine drilling paths and depths.
- Install underground utilities with precision, ensuring minimal disruption to existing infrastructure.
- Collaborate with project managers and field teams to coordinate drilling schedules and project timelines.
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while working in confined spaces.
- Document drilling activities and report progress to relevant stakeholders.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior operators and crew members.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, promoting safety and efficiency.
- Respond to operational challenges and provide solutions to ensure project continuity.
- Participate in safety meetings and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications and Skill
- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience operating HDD equipment or similar heavy machinery.
- Valid CDL Driver’s License with a clean driving record or willingness to obtain one.
- Ability to work in confined spaces with a strong safety performance record.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in teams.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and safety standards.
Experience Requirements
We seek candidates with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the construction or infrastructure industry, particularly in roles involving heavy equipment operation. Experience in leading projects or teams is beneficial, as is familiarity with the demands of working in various environmental conditions. Candidates should have a proven track record of safe and efficient operations in both urban and rural settings, showcasing their ability to navigate challenges effectively.
