Description

The Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School seeks applicants for adjunct faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice. This is a term, non-tenure track faculty appointment. Adjunct faculty are hired based on the needs of the law school and applications are continually evaluated throughout the year, with the first review beginning on May 4, 2026. Because program needs change quickly, candidates with a completed application on file will be given full consideration as vacancies open.

Examples of Duties

Adjunct faculty members are practicing attorneys, judges, or subject-matter experts who contribute to the academic mission of the law school through high-quality teaching and student engagement. Responsibilities include the following:

  • teaching assigned course(s) in accordance with the approved curriculum and academic standards of the law school;
  • holding scheduled class sessions (in-person, online, or hybrid) and ensure coverage of required instructional minutes;
  • designing and administering appropriate and required assessments (e.g., exams, papers, simulations, or practical exercises);
  • evaluating student performance fairly and timely, consistent with law school grading policies;
  • providing meaningful feedback to support student learning and bar preparation;
  • responding to student communications in a timely and professional manner and providing them supportive instruction outside of class meetings;
  • engaging in other duties as determined by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
All faculty members are expected to adhere to all University, Law School, ABA accreditation, collective bargaining agreement, and other relevant policies and procedures.

Due to the newly established $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions requesting consular processing outside of the U.S., Southern Illinois University is unable to provide H-1B sponsorship at this time for any prospective applicant who is outside of the U.S. and requires consular processing.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
