The Southern Highland Craft Guild seeks an outgoing, dynamic, arts-affiliated visionary to build connections in our community and expand the awareness of our Guild, throughout and beyond our region. This new position for the Guild will work with staff, members, and art organizations to extend our presence, create opportunities, and help develop a roadmap to enhance and grow the Guild.
The Guild is a nearly-hundred-year-old member-driven crafts organization encompassing nine states and over 800 members. We foster the cultivation and appreciation of the fine craft of the Southern Highland region through education, shared resources, marketing, and conservation. We seek to provide opportunities for our members while promoting the value of craft and its impact on our world. Our rich history and the excellence of our members’ work make us a distinguished leader in the field of fine American Craft.
A new Outreach Director would work directly with area arts organizations (in the regional area and beyond) to strengthen connections, build relationships, and create opportunities involving teaching, demonstrations, exhibits, events, and development strategies. The candidate should have a familiarity with national arts and craft organizations and be willing to work closely with those organizations. In addition, the candidate should have an innovative and relevant vision of how those communities could work with the Guild to create opportunities and avenues for growth. The Outreach Director would design a working network between arts organizations, staff, and member committees to design and implement projects for Guild improvement. Therefore, this candidate should be creative, outgoing, and able to work amicably with a variety of groups to achieve common goals.
The Outreach Director will answer to the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees. The Outreach Director will work closely with the Board to help create strategies for enhancement and will be responsible for implementing projects with the help of staff and committee members.
Responsibilities:
- Support the Guild’s vision for the growth of the Guild.
- Maintain strong connections with regional and national arts organizations, as well as Chambers of Commerce, to create opportunities for our members and for development of the Guild.
- Maintain connections with area schools, non-profits, and organizations to engage with the educational component of our mission.
- Host and attend openings, parties, fundraisers, and events.
- Listen to and connect with members; help to create member opportunities and build membership value; work to attract new members.
- Renew and oversee the Guild’s Ambassador Program, which puts members into schools and communities to promote the Guild and fulfill its mission.
- Work with staff and committees to help further the purpose of the Guild, to raise awareness, to vitalize our presence in the arts community.
- Act as a spokesperson for the Guild.
- Help with exhibitions of Guild work (at the Folk Art Center and in traveling shows), leading to the potential development of a museum.
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with arts organizations, locally and nationally.
- An understanding and association with the Southern Appalachian region.
- Knowledge of the Guild’s history and relationship with Asheville’s craft movement.
- Experience in Arts Administration, Marketing, and/or Education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Charismatic disposition, boundless creativity, and a self-starter mentality.
- Experience in creating, structuring, and executing strategies for organizations or companies.
Job Type: Part-time position
Pay: Based upon experience ($21-$25/hr.)
