Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Correctional Staff Nurse
Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and professional Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our correctional healthcare team. The Correctional Staff Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated individuals while maintaining safety, security, and professional standards within a correctional environment. This position requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to delivering quality healthcare to a diverse patient population.
Responsibilities
- Conduct intake screenings, health assessments, and sick call evaluations for inmates.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and facility policies.
- Monitor and document inmate health status, vital signs, and response to treatment.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and collaborate with security staff during emergency situations.
- Assist providers during chronic care clinics, physical examinations, and specialty consultations.
- Perform wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other nursing procedures within the LPN scope of practice.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with facility policies, nursing standards, HIPAA regulations, and correctional healthcare guidelines.
- Identify and report changes in inmate condition to the provider or supervising nurse.
- Participate in infection control, medication management, and quality improvement activities.
- Provide health education to inmates regarding chronic disease management, medication compliance, and preventive health practices.
- Collaborate with correctional officers and healthcare team members to ensure the safe and effective delivery of healthcare services.
Qualifications
- Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.
- Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program.
- Previous correctional, emergency, urgent care, primary care, or long-term care experience preferred.
- Proficiency in medication administration, phlebotomy, and clinical documentation.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems preferred.
- Strong assessment, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during emergencies and high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of infection control practices and correctional healthcare standards.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with healthcare and security personnel.
