The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is seeking a Human Resources and Finance Assistant in our Charlottesville, VA office. This individual will join our Human Resources team and report to our Director of Human Resources with a dotted line to the Director of Finance. The Human Resources and Finance Assistant will primarily function as support for the Human Resources department with recurring tasks in support of Finance operations. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful, nationally recognized organization that is effectively addressing some of the most pressing and challenging environmental issues throughout the South and the nation.

The ideal candidate will be task-oriented with the ability to think critically and work efficiently while taking direction and maintaining discretion. This position has access to confidential Human Resources and Finance information and requires successful completion of a criminal background check.

SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a 3-year term limit.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administer workers' compensation policy; tracking and maintain required provider panel postings.
  • Support employee benefits administration, including open enrollment and anniversary appreciation program coordination.
  • Assist with payroll-related processes, including transportation incentives, reimbursements, and payroll adjustment tracking.
  • Coordinate onboarding and offboarding activities, including pre-hire paperwork and collaboration with the IT department.
  • Compile and distribute employee communications and staff updates.
  • Maintain employee records and process personnel changes within the human resources information system (HRIS).
  • Respond to employment verification requests and support HR document management.
  • Track required compliance training, labor law postings, and HR compliance deadlines.
  • Coordinate HR training initiatives, interview scheduling, candidate travel, and other departmental projects.
  • Work with the AP Coordinator to process HR related invoices.
  • Create and maintain project codes and ensure records are accurate and consistent across accounting systems, time-tracking systems, and other tracking files.
  • Schedule internal and external meetings and take minutes, as necessary.
  • Organize and maintain Finance documents in SharePoint.
  • Provide light administrative support to the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Finance.
  • Assist with year-end processes, surveys, Board subcommittee support, and other administrative functions as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of work experience in a professional office setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including advanced word processing in Word, formatting and formulas in Excel.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat across a range of functions, including editing, combining, compressing, and organizing PDF documents.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail, with a commitment to doing work carefully and completely.
  • Proactively seeks out new knowledge and adapts quickly to new tasks and environments.
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and able to manage time effectively and prioritize under tight deadlines.
  • Upholds strict privacy standards and protects sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, follow through independently, and adapt to different working styles and levels of direction across multiple teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey information, actively listen, and build relationships with colleagues grounded in respect.
  • Cheerful outlook and enthusiasm for both Human Resources and Finance related tasks.

Compensation & Benefits:
SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. The wage range for this full-time and non-exempt position is $28.13/hour - $31.11/hour, based on experience. The annualized equivalent is approximately $58,500 – $64,700, assuming full-time hours. Actual placement within the range will depend on factors such as relevant experience, education, skills, and internal equity considerations. SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.  

All employees are required to reside in our region. SELC will provide relocation reimbursement up to a specific dollar amount for those relocating at least 50 miles from their current primary residence.
