Description
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Junior Helper supports the daily operations of the afterschool program by assisting Site Directors and Group Leaders in preparing and implementing activities for children. This role provides an opportunity for youth to gain experience working with children in a safe, supervised, and structured environment. All tasks must be completed under the direct supervision and observation of qualified staff.
Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional customer service.
- Assist in setting up and cleaning up materials for crafts, games, and other activities.
- Help staff facilitate transitions between activities and snack times.
- Support children in engaging in play and group activities under supervision.
- Monitor children’s activities, ensuring safety and identifying potential hazards.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a healthy environment for children.
- Perform basic organizational tasks (e.g. refilling supplies, tidying play areas).
- Shadow and learn from experienced educators and caregivers.
- Model appropriate behavior and help reinforce program expectations.
- Participate in required training or orientation sessions as requested.
- Maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for all children and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Must be responsible, reliable, and able to follow directions.
- Must enjoy working with children and exhibit patience and enthusiasm.
- Must work under the direct supervision of a qualified staff member at all times.
- Must not be left alone with children or be counted in staff-child ratio.
- Must adhere to all policies and procedures of the childcare program and NH state licensing.
- Must be able to complete YMCA required training as scheduled by management.
- Maintain updated certifications of the job (CPR and First Aid/AED).
- Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.
