Applicants must be able to work well with client agencies and the public; possess superior oral and written advocacy skills; have strong character and interpersonal skills; have good judgment; and have demonstrated the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. The USAO seeks a diverse complement of lawyers with a wide range of skills and experience. Hiring preferences include a strong academic record, litigation experience, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, demonstrated analytical ability, excellent communication abilities, good judgment, the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with the other attorneys, support staff, and stakeholders, and a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least one (1) year of experience as a licensed attorney (or post-law school graduation judicial clerkships) preparing for, participating in, and/or reviewing formal hearings or trials involving litigation at the federal, state, or local court level.

United States citizenship is required.

Responsibilities:

This position will require a range of skills and abilities, including managing a high-volume docket; researching case law and drafting complicated briefs; investigating factually and legally complex matters; interacting with agency clients and opposing counsel; and handling all aspects of federal court practice, including pleadings, motions, discovery, settlements, trials, and appearances and oral arguments before the Bankruptcy Court, District Court and Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

In our affirmative docket, Civil Division AUSAs pursue investigations and litigate cases designed to remedy violations of federal law, vindicating the rights of victims, protecting the public fisc, and changing unlawful practices by private individuals and entities, as well as state and local governmental actors. These cutting-edge matters span many different subject areas, including civil rights, fraud, environmental protection and health, and tax and bankruptcy.

The Civil Division's defensive practice is unique in its breadth and sophistication, engaging our AUSAs in a vast array of matters of public import. These cases include challenges to critical government policies, action, statutes and regulations, and matters implicating national security or foreign policy concerns, as well as tort, medical malpractice, and employment discrimination lawsuits, Bivens and other cases brought against individual federal officials, Freedom of Information Act suits, and immigration-related actions.

In all these matters, affirmative and defensive, Civil Division AUSAs serve as a zealous advocate, representing the interests of the United States in accordance with the facts and faithful to the rule of law.
