Part-Time Custodian (Seasonal)
Big Bear Discovery Center – Big Bear Lake, California

Position Summary
The Big Bear Discovery Center, a federal public visitor facility operated in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, seeks a dependable and experienced Part-Time Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, volunteers, and program participants. This seasonal position supports facility operations during the busy summer recreation season and is responsible for custodial services, light maintenance, exhibit upkeep, and grounds cleanliness throughout the Discovery Center property.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Sanitation
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, sinks, toilets, and public-use facilities.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors throughout the building.
- Dust and clean offices, classrooms, meeting spaces, exhibits, and visitor areas.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and transport waste to designated collection areas.
- Clean windows, doors, counters, and other surfaces as needed.
- Replenish restroom and janitorial supplies.
- Maintain janitorial equipment and storage areas in a clean and organized condition.
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
- Maintain cleanliness of walkways, patios, picnic areas, parking lots, and outdoor gathering spaces.
- Remove litter, debris, and hazards from Discovery Center grounds.
- Assist with light landscaping and facility appearance projects as assigned.
- Monitor exterior areas for safety concerns and report maintenance needs promptly.
Exhibit, Display & Facility Maintenance
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and perform minor repairs to frequently used visitor exhibits, displays, interpretive signage, educational fixtures, furniture, and interactive elements.
- Ensure exhibits and displays remain functional, presentable, and safe for visitor use.
- Identify and report maintenance needs, damage, wear, or safety concerns requiring specialized repair.
- Assist with the setup, relocation, upkeep, and seasonal maintenance of exhibits and interpretive displays.
- Perform routine facility maintenance tasks, including changing light bulbs, tightening hardware, replacing minor fixtures, and other basic repairs as assigned.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all federal facility safety standards, cleaning protocols, and operating procedures.
- Safely handle cleaning chemicals and equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations and manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintain a safe environment for visitors, volunteers, staff, and contractors.
- Report maintenance concerns, hazards, vandalism, or safety issues to management in a timely manner.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with U.S. Forest Service facility standards and partner organization policies.
Event & Operational Support
- Set up and break down rooms, equipment, and furnishings for public programs, meetings, special events, and educational activities.
- Support Discovery Center staff with seasonal operational needs as assigned.
- Provide courteous interactions with visitors while maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor.
Schedule
- Seasonal employment: June 2026 through September 2026.
- Part-time position requiring 24 hours per week.

- Friday: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
- Saturday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Sunday: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
- Monday: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
- Total scheduled hours: 24 hours per week.

Compensation
- $20.00–$24.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

The Big Bear Discovery Center serves thousands of visitors annually and provides educational, recreational, and interpretive services on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service and community partners. Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of custodial, janitorial, facilities maintenance, building maintenance, or related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair tasks using basic hand tools.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and perform physical labor throughout a work shift.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Ability to pass any required background screening for work within a federal facility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience maintaining public facilities, visitor centers, schools, museums, parks, government buildings, or similar high-traffic environments.
- Knowledge of safe chemical handling, custodial best practices, and workplace safety procedures.
- Experience with exhibit, display, or interpretive facility maintenance.
- Experience working in a public-facing environment with strong customer service skills.
