Position Summary:
SCMC is seeking a Referral Coordinator with strong customer service and medical support skills, ideally with Medical Assistant (MA) experience or familiarity with medical terminology and specialties.
The Referral Coordinator assists patients in arranging and scheduling specialist referrals, ensuring all necessary documentation and communication are completed efficiently. This role requires excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to provide compassionate support to patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure referral policies and workflows are standardized and up to date.
- Gather and send accurate demographic, insurance, and clinical information to referred specialists.
- Prioritize referrals based on urgency and address them in a timely manner.
- Serve as a point of contact for patients and specialists, assisting with questions or concerns.
- Help resolve issues related to referrals, including those involving language or social barriers.
- Follow up on all referrals until completed or declined by the patient.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and organized work environment.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong customer service and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Knowledge of medical terminology and specialties preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
- Proficient with computers and scheduling systems.
- Understanding of patient care or clinical workflows a plus.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Medical Assistant certification preferred but not required.
- Prior experience in a medical office or customer service setting preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced clinic environment.
- Requires sitting for long periods and frequent use of a computer and telephone.
