Part-Time ESL Teacher
Department: Instructional Services
Reports To: Principal
Employment Status: Part-Time
Work Schedule: 2 Hours Daily
Location: Southern Avenue Charter School
Position Summary
The Part-Time ESL Teacher is responsible for providing instructional support and language development services to English Learner (EL) students. The ESL Teacher will work with students to strengthen their English language skills and support their academic success across content areas.
The Part-Time ESL Teacher will work two (2) hours daily and will monitor assign English Learner students to ensure they are receiving appropriate language support and accommodations. The teacher will collaborate with classroom teachers and school administration to monitor student progress and address identified instructional needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESL Instruction
- Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to identified English Learner students.
- Develop and implement appropriate language-development lessons based on students' individual language proficiency levels and educational needs.
- Support students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
- Provide small-group and/or individualized instruction as appropriate.
- Reinforce academic vocabulary and language skills necessary for success in the general education classroom.
- Adjust instructional strategies to meet the diverse language and academic needs of students.
Student Monitoring
- Monitor assigned EL students' academic and language development.
- Track student progress and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Monitor students' participation, attendance, classroom performance, and progress toward language-development goals.
- Communicate concerns regarding student progress to the Principal, classroom teachers, and other appropriate personnel.
- Assist in identifying students who may need additional academic or language support.
- Monitor the effectiveness of ESL interventions and recommend adjustments when appropriate.
Collaboration
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to support EL students within the general education setting.
- Provide classroom teachers with strategies and recommendations for supporting English Learners.
- Assist teachers in understanding appropriate instructional accommodations and language supports.
- Participate in student support meetings and conferences as requested.
- Communicate professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress and language-development needs when appropriate.
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain accurate records related to ESL instruction, student monitoring, and progress.
- Maintain required documentation in accordance with school procedures and applicable state and federal requirements.
- Maintain and utilize an active TN PULSE account as required for the position.
- Stay informed of applicable Tennessee Department of Education requirements related to English Learners and ESL services.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
Required Qualifications
- Must hold a valid Tennessee teaching license.
- Must have an ESL endorsement on the Tennessee teaching license.
- Must have an active TN PULSE account.
- Previous experience working with English Learners/ESL students preferred.
- Strong knowledge of instructional practices for English Learners.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and families.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with the school team.
Work Schedule
The Part-Time ESL Teacher will work two (2) hours daily according to a schedule established by Southern Avenue Charter School.
The daily schedule may include:
- Direct ESL instruction
- Small-group or individualized student support
- Student monitoring
- Collaboration with classroom teachers
- Student progress documentation
- Communication with school administration regarding student needs
