JOB SUMMARY  

The Southeastern University School of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Percussion Studies for the Music Studies department. Priority duties in the role include teaching courses in percussion applied lessons, percussion ensemble, drumline (Athletic Band), and music education coursework at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will recruit and develop a variety of music majors majors, supervise student teachers and field studies, and complete other duties matching the candidate’s expertise according to department need.

Salary and Rank: Commensurate with experience.

Starting Date:  The appointment carries a full-time, one year contract from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027.  

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS 

Reports to (Specify Dean and College/School): Dean Tyson Voigt, School of Music

Supervisory Responsibility: May supervise some adjunct faculty and student workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but is not limited to the following: 

• Teach a range of undergraduate percussion and music courses.

• Develop and deliver faith-integrated curriculum using innovative and diverse teaching methods.

• Advise and mentor undergraduate students in their academic and professional development.

• Leverage professional experience to provide students with practical, real-world insights into performance, education, and other musical careers.

• Contribute to the growth of SEU’s undergraduate music programs through curriculum development, accreditation support, and collaboration with colleagues.

• Engage in departmental and university activities, including service on committees and participation in campus events.

• Support SEU’s mission and values through service, collaboration, and community engagement

Qualifications

EDUCATION   

Required Education:

• Masters degree in music performance or music education required.
• Evidence of at least three years of experience teaching percussion lessons and ensembles at the collegiate level (including GA positions).
• Strong experience performing and/or teaching each of the following:
  • Classical solo/orchestral percussion,
  • Variety of drum set styles
  • Drumline

Preferred Education:

• Doctorate in music preferred
• Demonstrable success developing positive relationships with secondary school instrumental directors and community members
• K-12 classroom teaching experience and a degree in music education

EXPERIENCE (Teaching or Industry)

Required:

• Academic Processes - Knowledge of university guidelines, course descriptions, and academic terminology.
• Clerical - Knowledge of office administrative procedures including word processing, managing files and records, typing, and other office procedures.
• Computer - Knowledge of basic computer processes including word processing, web browsing, Google enterprise software (Google docs, Google sheets, etc.), and Microsoft Office including Basic Microsoft Excel.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Monday - Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm, or as class schedule requires

TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. SAFETY

SCREENING

All full-time positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the University’s insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
