What are the responsibilities and job description for the 7d Van Driver position at Southeastern Massachusetts Educational Collaborative?
SMEC is seeking a strong and diverse pool of applicants for the position of 7d Van Driver. The 7d Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting and assisting students to/from school programs and as otherwise needed in vans ranging from 7-15 passengers in size.
This is a part time position on a school year schedule, plus 5 week summer program. Split shift with morning and afternoon transport routes. Approximately 15-20 hours per week. Local travel between programs is required to support students at different school buildings.
High School diploma or equivalent; experience with students with or without disabilities preferred. Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and School Pupil Transport (7d) License, or the ability to obtain and maintain a School Pupil Transport (7d) License.

Essential Duties:
-Ability to obtain and maintain a valid 7d license at all times.
-Obey all Massachusetts state laws regarding driving, including but not limited to, following the speed limit, texting and driving, and ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt at all times.
-Conducts daily safety check of the vehicle and report any mechanical problems to the Transportation manager as soon as possible. --Accurately completes vehicle maintenance forms and maintain vehicle logs.
-Responsible for handling of the students belongings from students residences to/from school programs.
-Provide assistance to students with mobility including lifting.
-Daily cleaning and “gas-up” of the vehicle.
-Practice defensive driving techniques at all times.
-Learn and utilize the appropriate techniques for utilizing the wheelchair vans including ramps, lifts and wheelchair tie-downs.
-Handling of emergency situations, including evacuation and supervision of students during transport until emergency assistance arrives.
-Follow procedures whenever a SMEC vehicle is involved in an accident, including calling police and completing necessary paperwork.
-Ability and willingness to drive any of the SMEC vehicles during inclement weather.
-Accurately completes documentation related to student incidents/injuries, physical intervention, and 51A reports and/or DPPC under the guidance of teacher and/or administration.
-Shows respect and compassion for all members of the school environment including students, families, staff, and other community members.
-Effectively utilizes any recommended adaptive equipment for individual students.
-Participates in all required Collaborative in-services as well as those recommended by supervisors.
-Communicate all significant occurrences to the appropriate supervisor in a respectful and timely manner.
-Maintains an open, honest, and respectful relationship with parents and others involved with the student’s success.
-Maintains professional boundaries with parents and students.
-Physical ability to perform physical restraints/escorts as needed.
-Expected to read and adhere to all Employee Handbook policies.
