Position Title

Middle/High School English Teacher

Nature of Position

The Middle/High School English Teacher provides high-quality, standards-based instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) for students in grades 6–12, as assigned. Courses may include English 6–8, English 9–12, Reading, Creative Writing, Journalism, Advanced Placement (AP) English, or other English Language Arts courses aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).

This is specialized teaching work performed in a classroom setting. The teacher is directly responsible to the principal or his/her designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The English Teacher:

  • Instructs students in English Language Arts content specified by the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and adheres to all policies and procedures established by SECEP and participating school divisions.
  • Plans and delivers engaging, student-centered lessons that promote reading comprehension, literary analysis, written communication, speaking, listening, vocabulary development, and critical thinking.
  • Develops instructional activities that foster active learning through collaborative discussions, literature circles, writing workshops, presentations, research projects, and technology-enhanced instruction.
  • Teaches students to analyze fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, informational texts, and multimedia resources using evidence-based reading and writing strategies.
  • Provides explicit instruction in grammar, usage, mechanics, composition, research skills, and effective written and oral communication.
  • Integrates instructional technology, digital literacy, and multimedia resources to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Provides individual, cooperative, and small-group instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and educational needs.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the academic, behavioral, linguistic, and social-emotional needs of all learners, including students with disabilities.
  • Establishes and maintains high standards of student behavior to create a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • Designs and administers a variety of formative and summative assessments that measure student mastery of curriculum objectives and provide opportunities for authentic demonstration of learning.
  • Uses assessment data to monitor student progress, provide timely feedback, and adjust instruction to improve student achievement.
  • Selects and requests textbooks, novels, instructional materials, technology resources, and classroom supplies while maintaining inventory records as required.
  • Encourages students to develop independent reading habits, effective communication skills, creativity, and lifelong appreciation for literature and language.
  • Maintains accurate records of attendance, grades, student progress, and other required documentation in accordance with division policies.
  • Collaborates with special education teachers, school counselors, instructional specialists, administrators, and other staff to maximize student success.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, academic performance, attendance, and behavior.
  • Supervises students during classroom instruction and assigned non-instructional activities, including field trips, assemblies, lunch duty, bus duty, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Sponsors or assists with student publications, literary clubs, debate teams, drama productions, writing competitions, or other extracurricular activities, as assigned.
  • Participates cooperatively with the principal or designee in the teacher evaluation process in accordance with division policies and established guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $61,289.00 - $91,587.00 per year
