Job Title CDL Instructor - Community and Correctional Programs Job Description

The CDL Instructor provides comprehensive Class A & B training across SCC’s CDL programs, including classroom, range, simulator, and on‑the‑road instruction. This position supports traditional CDL students, adult education learners participating in Integrated Education and Training (IET), and incarcerated students receiving simulator‑based training at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility. This role delivers entry‑level Class A & B CDL training instruction in accordance with FMCSA requirements, DOT and State regulations, and SCC/DOC policies.

The instructor promotes positive learning, supports student success, and prepares individuals for meaningful employment upon release or program completion. This position requires professionalism, flexibility, and the ability to work safely and effectively within correctional and community settings.

The CDL Instructor will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.

This position is a full-time position (261-day contract); with an annual starting salary of $55,000.00. Benefits include medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, paid discretionary time, paid spring and holiday breaks, 15 days’ vacation and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement plan.

This position is dependent on continuation of grant funding.

Essential Duties Summary

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver CDL‑A and CDL‑B classroom and simulator instruction aligned with FMCSA Entry‑Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards
  • Provide classroom, group, and one‑on‑one instruction to members of the general public, halfway house residents, and individuals incarcerated at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility (MPCF)
  • Ensure full compliance with all Federal, State, DOT, SCC, DOC, and MPCF regulations and safety expectations
  • Maintain safety oversight during all training, evaluations, and simulator activities
  • Maintain active FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) status
  • Assess student skills, progress, and proficiency in simulated driving tasks
  • Provide coaching, feedback, retraining, and instructional support as needed
  • Assist with enrollment activities, student progress tracking, and connections to SCC and DOC resources
  • Collaborate with the CDL Lead Instructor, CBIZ staff, and IET instructors to maintain and update training materials
  • Assist with lesson planning, curriculum updates, and development of instructional materials
  • Oversee proper use and upkeep of simulator equipment and training tools
  • Maintain accurate documentation, attendance records, grades, evaluations, and required reports
  • Notify the Coordinator/Liaison and facility staff of student concerns, incidents, or safety issues
  • Attend required meetings, onboarding sessions, professional development, and training activities
  • Contribute to program procedures, continuous improvement efforts, and required reporting
  • Complete required DOC security training and SCC/DOC orientations

Working Conditions and Expectations

  • Conduct training at SCC campus, community training locations, MPCF, and halfway house facilities
  • Attend SCC and DOC/MPCF orientations
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends as needed
  • Travel throughout the district as required
  • Maintain professional representation of SCC, DOC, and CBIZ at all times.

Required Qualifications

  • Class A CDL with an acceptable driving record
  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial driving experience
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Current DOT Medical Card and ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screenings
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with professional integrity.
  • Ability to Follow SCC and DOC (department and facility) policies and procedures.
  • Teaching and training experience preferred.
  • Ability to organize and deliver learning activities.
  • Ability to understand federal and state program guidelines.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and professional attitude and presentation.
  • Commitment to safety and compliance with all training rules and regulations.
  • Willingness to complete required grading, paperwork, attendance, progress reports, and documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to conduct basic research.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members
  • Ability to work respectively and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The CDL Instructor must have the ability and mobility to serve a rural service area; travel within the SCC district or statewide is required. Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule.
