Job Title Accessibility Services Specialist & Student Care Coordinator Job Description

The Accessibility Services Specialist & Student Care Coordinator provides coordination and direct support for key functions that promote student accessibility, accountability, and general well-being. This position merges the responsibilities of accessibility services and behavioral/student care case management, ensuring compliance with federal regulations (ADA, Section 504, Title IX, etc.), and managing proactive intervention and response systems like SCC’s CARE/BIT Team and student conduct processes. The individual serves in a student advocacy role, providing inclusive, trauma-informed support while building strong relationships across campus.

This position is a full-time position (261 workdays per year). The starting salary is $50,000 per year.

The Accessibility Services Specialist & Student Care Coordinator will be primarily located at the West Burlington campus but is expected to regularly work out of the Keokuk campus to maintain a strong familiarity with the employees, students, and operations at that location (one full day per week). Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule, which may include evenings and weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.

The Accessibility Services Specialist & Student Care Coordinator will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.

Essential Duties Summary

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Accessibility & ADA Coordination

  • Review psychoeducational and medical documentation to determine eligibility and appropriate accommodations per ADA and Section 504.
  • Consult with students, faculty, and healthcare providers to determine and communicate reasonable accommodations.
  • Maintain inventory and recommend updates for assistive technology and accessibility resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of student disability documentation and records.
  • Assist with training and guidance for faculty and staff regarding disability rights, classroom accommodations, and inclusive practices.
  • Take the lead on adaptive technologies – understanding functionality, distribution to students, and advances in the field
  • Update accessibility policies, forms, manuals, and web content.
  • Stay informed on national best practices related to accessibility in higher education

Student Advocacy & CARE Team Coordination

  • Serve as an active member of SCC’s CARE/BIT Team; assist students experiencing crises involving health, safety, housing, or other basic needs.
  • Provide advocacy and resource referrals to students in distress or needing emergency assistance, including the administration of Blackhawk CARES Fund and other support programs.
  • Develop Care Team meeting agendas in coordination of the Dean of Students. Coordinate and lead CARE Team meetings in absence of Dean of Students.
  • Serve as a secondary administrator of the Maxient system; monitor incoming reports and coordinate follow-up or referrals.
  • Counsel students on academic, social, or personal challenges and facilitate problem-solving with faculty, staff, or parents as appropriate.
  • Assist with ongoing faculty/staff training on student wellbeing, conduct processes, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.

Student Conduct

  • Assist with the adjudication of student conduct cases and the oversight of due process within SCC’s Code of Conduct.
  • Collaborate with Dean of Students in recruitment, training, and guidance of the Judicial Board.
  • Provide leadership in regular policy review and implementation related to student rights, responsibilities, and accountability.
  • Assist in organizing educational programs and awareness campaigns on student rights, safety, and other related topics.

General Duties

  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned.
  • Participate in campus programming and recruitment events.
  • Apply ethical standards to all decision-making; promote a harassment-free, inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to the community college philosophy and SCC’s mission, values, and strategic goals.
  • Support change initiatives and work effectively across departments to improve student outcomes.
  • Take the lead on Blackhawks Be Safe program – sexual violence, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking prevention, by-stander intervention, etc. (at conclusion of VAWA grant fall 2026)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum two years’ experience in higher education, student personnel/affairs/development, social work or social services, or accessibility services required.
  • Demonstrated success in interpreting and applying ADA, Section 504, FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, Clery, and related legislation.
  • Experience adjudicating student conduct cases, managing student behavioral concerns, or coordinating accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Experience working with Maxient, Ellucian, Google Suite, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and assistive technology preferred.
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and cultural competency, particularly in supporting disabled populations.

  • Comfort with evolving technology and capacity to troubleshoot or learn new systems quickly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in accordance with legal and institutional standards.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be available for evening and weekend hours as needed.
  • Must be able to travel within the SCC district to serve a rural service area.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check.
  • Physical ability to lift items up to 50 lbs. and conduct routine tasks requiring mobility and endurance.
