Job Description Summary

The MRI Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. This role involves comprehensive patient care, from initial screening and preparation to performing the scan, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining strict adherence to imaging protocols. The technologist operates advanced MRI equipment to produce detailed images of internal body structures, evaluates image quality for radiologist review, and manages patient information with the utmost confidentiality. A key focus of this position is to provide compassionate, safe, and professional care while collaborating with radiologists and other healthcare staff to ensure accurate and timely diagnoses.


Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Patient Screening: Assess patients for contraindications (e.g., metal implants, pacemakers, pregnancy) and obtain informed consent.
  • Patient Preparation: Explain procedures, answer questions, and ensure patient comfort and safety before and during the scan.
  • Positioning Patients: Accurately position patients and coils to obtain optimal imaging results.
  • Operating MRI Equipment: Use MRI scanners and software to capture high-quality diagnostic images of internal body structures.
  • Administering Contrast Agents: Inject gadolinium-based contrast media when required, monitoring for allergic reactions or side effects.
  • Image Acquisition: Follow imaging protocols to obtain clear, diagnostic-quality images tailored to the referring physician’s request.
  • Image Review: Evaluate images for quality and completeness before submitting them for radiologist interpretation.
  • Safety Protocols: Enforce MRI safety guidelines to protect patients, staff, and self from magnetic field hazards.
  • Emergency Response: Recognize and respond to medical emergencies, including claustrophobia, contrast reactions, or code situations.
  • Documentation: Accurately document patient information, procedure details, and any incidents in the electronic medical record.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine checks and coordinate service or repairs to ensure MRI equipment is functioning properly.
  • Collaboration with Radiologists: Communicate with radiologists to clarify imaging needs and ensure diagnostic accuracy.
  • Patient Advocacy: Provide compassionate care, respecting patient privacy, dignity, and cultural differences.
  • Continuing Education: Stay updated on MRI technology, safety standards, and clinical best practices through ongoing training.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in quality control programs to maintain high standards in imaging and patient care.
  • Confidentiality: Manages all information obtained with strict confidentiality to safeguard patient information from use by unauthorized personnel.
  • Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

Qualifications

Minimum Education Required

  • Graduate of a radiology program approved by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
  • Registered in one of the primary technologist pathways by the ARRT, ARDMS, or NMTCB within 12 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within (6) months of hire

Minimum Education Preferred

  • Registered as an MRI technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • ACLS
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree

Minimum Experience Preferred

  • 3 years of MRI experience

Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Ability to achieve and hold a current and active registry from ARRT, ARDMS, or NMTCB.
  • Must meet all continuing education requirements for credentials and registry.
  • Ability and actions to adapt to changes in work/work flow.
  • Demonstrates effective time management techniques.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for educational requirements as evidenced by reading all assigned related references, and attending all required educational programs relative to responsibilities, or webinars, completing annual Symplr requirements, and completing annual performance evaluation requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of MRI physics, safety protocols, and cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Proficient in operating MRI equipment and related software.
  • Ability to accurately position patients for a variety of diagnostic scans.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of various disease processes.
  • Expertise in administering contrast agents and managing potential reactions.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, especially in emergency situations.
  • Compassion and empathy to provide a comfortable and safe experience for patients, many of whom may be anxious or in pain.
  • Critical thinking to interpret physician protocols and adapt scanning techniques for different clinical indications and patient anatomies.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations.
  • Dedication to continuing education and staying updated on advancements in MRI technology.
  • Proficient in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems for patient documentation, scheduling, and information retrieval.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to operate MRI equipment and related software, and to navigate and utilize the EHR system efficiently.
  • Exceptional verbal communication for explaining complex procedures to patients in a clear, reassuring manner.
  • Effective written communication for accurate and timely documentation in patient records.
  • Demonstrates proper response and reliability for on-call coverage.
  • On-call employees are required to respond to a call to return to duty in timeframes as defined by their department leadership.
