Summary: Coordinates the technical functions of the clinical laboratory section to ensure the efficient daily operations of the laboratory. Establishes, maintains, and delivers quality and cost-efficient laboratory testing relevant to the customer needs using appropriate policy, procedure, staffing, and budgetary management within CAP, TJC, FDA, GDHR, AABB, and OSHA standards and laboratory policy and procedures. All team members of Southeast Georgia Health System will promote a culture of safety, follow established policies and adhere to all state and federal regulatory requirements, Joint Commission requirements, and national patient safety standards.

- Establishes technical policies/procedures for the specified testing area through Procedure manuals in accordance with regulatory agency standards and licensing requirements in order to provide quality patient care. Reviews and revises policy and procedures in the procedure manuals on a periodic basis and makes revisions when necessary to keep technical procedures current
- Responsible for personnel management in the Chemistry and Esoteric Special Testing sections of the laboratory.
- Provides technical expertise through coordination and review of all laboratory testing records in the specified area. Reviews abnormal test results, variances in laboratory policies and training requirements. Monitors quality control and maintenance records and makes adjustments when necessary. Oversees the evaluation of new lab test kits, reagents, instruments and/or other products according to a written protocol and study. Oversees the orientation and training for new team members and students. Assists in performance improvement projects and initiatives.
- Mentors laboratory staff to ensure quality, time-effective laboratory testing which meets or exceeds our customer's expectations. Assists in personnel interviews, performance evaluations, technical competency reviews. Participates in team member counseling sessions, and recommends corrective actions when appropriate. Strives to achieve maximum staff productivity through efficient work practices. Encourages team member self-development and assists the Laboratory Administrative Team members in providing continuing education and in-service training to help staff remain current in the technical field.
- Assists in planning and writing goals and objectives for the fiscal year. Assists in the preparation of the Capital and Operational budgets. Monitors operational variances as requested. Assists with the inventory management program for the specified testing area and recommends products for purchase.
- Prioritizes testing performed to assure that quality results are released in a timely manner to benefit patient care and physician's needs. Oversees the organization of the testing area in a way that minimizes turnaround time of results and maximum productivity of personnel.
- Interprets laboratory tests and provides guidelines for appropriate actions to verify accuracy when abnormal values and/or discrepancies are encountered. Communicates these findings to the physician according to laboratory policy and recommends further testing when appropriate and with the guidance of the Laboratory Director/Manager and Laboratory Medical Director.
- Participates as a member of the Laboratory Administrative Team. Acts as a liaison between the Laboratory Administrative Team, laboratory staff, internal and external customers.
- Establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with patients, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
- This position requires 80% of the time performing laboratory testing at the bench and 20% performing administrative duties.
