We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Optical Assistant to join our healthcare team. The Optical Assistant will play a vital role in ensuring smooth clinic operations while delivering compassionate patient care across diverse populations, including pediatrics and senior care.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient intake, including recording vital signs and updating medical records
- Prepare patients for eye examinations and assist with fitting eyewear and contact lenses
- Support ophthalmologists and optometrists during examinations and procedures
- Manage appointment scheduling within EMR systems like Epic and coordinate follow-up visits
- Maintain cleanliness and aseptic technique in the optical lab and exam rooms
- Handle retail sales of eyewear, lenses, and accessories, utilizing retail math skills for transactions
- Educate patients on eye health, lens options, and proper use of optical devices
- Support laboratory processes related to ophthalmic testing or lens fabrication when applicable
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality
- Assist with billing procedures including medical coding and medical billing processes
- Participate in inventory management of optical supplies and equipment
Qualifications
- Prior experience in ophthalmology, clinic settings, or optical retail sales preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and vital signs measurement
- Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or other electronic health record platforms
- Experience with laboratory techniques, aseptic procedures, or medical coding is advantageous
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in managing medical records and billing documentation
- Excellent communication skills for patient interaction and team collaboration
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient privacy and data security
- Retail management experience or retail math skills are a plus for handling sales transactions
