General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Adult Education Director, the Adult Education/ESL Assistant Director will serve as day-to-day operational manager for the ESL program. Responsibilities will include: building and staffing schedules; facilitating the intake & onboarding of new students; hiring, training, observing/evaluating, and supporting adjunct instructors; determining professional development needs of instructors and staff; making recommendations for hiring staff, and then assisting with onboarding, training, and supervision of staff; offering/facilitating professional development; addressing student concerns/complaints; developing/selecting curriculum coordinating the assessment of students and reporting of student data; adhering to state, federal, and college policies; communicating compliance requirements to staff; marketing program. Must be available to work occasional Friday evening and Saturday hours during testing times. This is a full-time, regular position.
Essential Functions
Build and Staff Schedules
- Determine schedule and staffing needs; construct a schedule for Student Orientations, classes, learning labs and testing that meets student needs; ensure an appropriate number of sections based on course demand; reserve classrooms/facilities; assign staff to schedule; submit schedule with appropriate section numbers, course numbers, start and end times, classrooms/locations, and instructor assignments to Registration and Records, supervisor, and other offices that need to know; provide updated schedules when there are changes.
Hire and Supervise Adjunct Faculty
- Determine staffing needs; provide Human Resources with a position description and advertising schedule for needed staff; review adjunct pool regularly and communicate with those who have applied; interview potential candidates; inform HR of candidates to begin hiring process; onboard into program/provide training; observe and evaluate annually.
- Ensure adjunct faculty compliance with policies and procedures; ensure faculty members have the resources they need; monitor class performance; and address student complaints/faculty issues with students.
- Verify and sign time sheets for adjunct and part-time faculty and staff.
Supervise Other Program Staff
- Assist with the hiring process and make recommendations to hire other program staff; assist with onboarding/training of new staff; evaluate staff.
Determine and Deliver on Professional Development Needs of Staff
- Determine professional development needs of staff and ESL Adjunct Faculty; organize/facilitate professional development training.
Develop/select curriculum
- In cooperation with the Director and other staff and faculty, develop and/or select curriculum/educational materials.
Assist with Intake of New Students
- Assist with completing intakes for the program; coordinate the process for completion of the enrollment and intake, onboarding process, and career pathways; develop, implement,
- Strengthen educational supports and opportunities for students (e.g., pathways, advising, workshops, trainings, retention efforts).
Assist with Resource Development
- Assist in writing and managing grants as assigned; communicate and collaborate regarding funding opportunities.
Assist with Marketing and Public Relations
- Assist in planning and development of promotional material; represent the program at community and College events.
- Assist in recruitment and community education for the program and the services provided by the program and the college.
Serve as a Member of the Adult Education Leadership Team
- Attend meetings as scheduled; contribute to meetings in constructive ways; communicate regularly and respectfully with supervisor and others on the leadership team
- Set an example of professionalism and teamwork for other employees in the program.

Marginal Functions
- In communication and cooperation with the Director, serve as a liaison between the college and community-based agencies and organizations.

- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.

- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience working with grant-funded programs, fund development (grant writing), and/or grant reporting.
- Familiarity with distance and hybrid learning.
- Ability to develop and schedule program activities.
- Ability to organize group activities.
- Ability to use a computer and Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to work and communicate with diverse groups of students, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
- Two (2) years of work experience in coordination, teaching, management, and leadership in Adult Education/ESL.
- Work experience with grants, data management systems, and budgets.
- Experience working with non-native English language learners.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education or related field.
- Two or more years working in Adult Education.
- Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.
- Experience with project management.
Salary
$48,110 per year
Benefits
SCC BEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA)
Schedule
Normal working hours for this full-time regular position are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour work week, based on a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek. This position involves evening sessions and some weekend responsibilities.
